Visitation today, funeral Saturday for Spc. Novak
TWO RIVERS, WI — Visitation for Army Spc. Shaun A. Novak, 21, killed by a roadside bomb Aug. 27 in Iraq, is from 2 to 7 p.m. today at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
Visitation resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and continues until the funeral service begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The body, traveling in a flag-draped casket on a Northwest Airlines flight, arrived Thursday evening at General Mitchell Field in Milwaukee for transport to Two Rivers, Novak’s hometown. A military honor guard was on hand at the airport.
The body was escorted home by members of the Two Rivers Police Department and the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department. The soldier’s father, Randy Novak, is an officer in the sheriff’s department.
The Rev. William O’Brien will officiate at the funeral. A procession after the service will lead from the church past Two Rivers High School, where Novak was a member of the first graduating class in 2003. The procession will continue through downtown Two Rivers and go to the Holy Cross Cemetery for military burial.
Army representatives, VFW Post 7753, Mishicot, and the Patriot Guard Riders will assist in the services.
A roadside bomb killed four members of Novak’s platoon and injured seven while they were returning from a patrol, the Army said.
Novak was a passenger in a M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, which was being followed by a Hummer unit.
All were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
