Mr Play wrote:The first game was fun! We had a storm front pass through a couple of hours before the game, but to my surprise they kept the afternoon games. The fields were muddy in spots but I'm glad we got the first game under our belts. We don't keep score but the kids had fun and everyone dribbled the ball really well. All of the parents are really supportive and no one seems to be putting too much pressure on their kids.

Here are a few pictures from the warmups and the game. I'm getting a matching shirt for games next week.

It's getting there, but I'm really glad I'm doing this. It gives me 1-on-1 time with Colton, and that's important for him. Cameron is starting cub scouts too, which gives me scheduled time with him. The tendency is to give the baby all of the attention, and I really want to avoid that for the older boys' sakes.

One of our dad's has a nice digital camera, and they emailed me some pictures he took of the first game.
Below are a few of my favorites, and you can see the rest of them here;

The website for the team is up and running. It's really basic with just a calendar and photo gallery for Game 1, but I hope to add more to it as the season progresses. I don't have individual shots of all of the kids yet, and I don't want to leave anyone out by putting only some of them on the front page.

Check it out at www.garlandpirates.org - Go Pirates!

ok..well i didn't take the time to read the whole topic, but i read the first page...i used to play soccer..(i stopped a few years ago)... and my dad used to be my coach... being the coache's son or daughter has some benefits (picking out your number before the rest of the team, getting to have extra help, and you get to enjoy quality time) but it can have some disadvantages as well--- like my dad was always harder on me than everyone else, always expected me to be the best, i wasn't allowed to miss a practice or game unless i was realy sick-- but those don't matter that much---the most important thing is that the children have fun, escpecially your son! it doesn't matter for wins/losses just be sure they are learning something and having fun doing so...with that said good luck and have a great season!!!! :P :D

Thanks for the feedback BHAkeet - I'm glad you survived it! :)

I do expect more out of Colton as far as listening goes, and I am harder on him than the others. I even yanked him out of a game once for goofing off. I put him back in after a couple of minutes, but I did wonder whether it was the right thing to do after I did it. He scored a goal and got over it pretty quickly, but I do worry about being harder on him because he's my son...

Today's game was rained out, but we had our best game of the season yesterday. The kids stayed focused and listened to me, and Colton didn't pull any of his silliness on the field. I think pulling him out of the game the other day taught him a lesson and set an example for the other kids, so maybe it was the right thing to do after all.

Our older son's coach has a conflict for their game on the 28th, so he asked me to step in for him that day. Cameron is happy that I get to coach a game for him too!

Oh and Colton says he always want me to be his coach, so I must not be too hard on him. My fear of that was the big reason I was reluctant to do this at first...

Sounds like the season is going well!! Can anyone even imagine Bill's son being silly??? :o

Coaching Colton's team, filling in for Cameron's coach...be careful, next thing you know you'll be heading up the whole Dallas-area youth soccer program! :D

Yeah, I think the silliness must come from Mrs. Play
I need to get a picture of his happy dance - it really is cute.

Believe it or not, North Texas has the biggest youth soccer program in the US. I'm really having fun with it so far, so I guess you never know...

Yesterday's rained-out game was rescheduled for 11/7, so the season just got extended another week!
I'm trying to talk the parents into signing up for a league tournament 11/2 - 11/5, so hopefully we'll get a few more games under our belts then too.
I figure the more game experience the better at this point...
