He performed Dukes on Sunday in Hawaii.

I wonder if Silver Wings is the old Merle Haggard song? Image

Cinco De Mayo in Mexico could be from Guy Clark's new album.

Once upon at time Guy regaled us with "Baby Took A Limo To Memphis" (The song appeared on Dublin Blues [1995]), but on this go-round, he's all fired up about "Cinco De Mayo In Memphis." As you might figure from the title some folks from south of the border have hit town - "deckhands from the towboats" and "Southern belles and senoritas" - togged up in blue-suede shoes, they're hell-bent on a high ol' time in the bars on Beale Street "Swingin' pool cues at piñatas" and taking the tourist trail around Graceland.

There's some info in the 8/24 thread in News, and the last partial track list would be at http://www.buffettnews.com/forum/viewto ... c&start=80, assuming I've figured out how to link threads right. :)

"Cinco de Mayo in Memphis" is apparently a Guy Clark song, with another cowriter whose name slips my mind, but which I wrote down in that thread. :) About 2/3 of the songs listed in the 8/24 thread are by outside writers; I don't know about the new ones on this thread.

Hopefully it'll be a good album. Not much longer until we find out, eh? :)

Wheel Inside the Wheel is probably the Mary Gauthier song from Mercy Now.

http://www.marygauthier.com/lyrics.html

Artist/Band: Gauthier Mary
Lyrics for Song: Wheel Inside The Wheel
Lyrics for Album: Mercy Now

The parade of souls is marching across the sky
Their heat and their light bathed in blue as they march by
The All Stars play "When the Saints Go Marching In"
A second line forms and they wave white hankies in the wind

Satchmo takes a solo, and he flashes his million dollar smile
Marie Laveau promenades with Oscar Wilde
Big Funky Stella twirls her little red umbrella to the beat
As the soul parade winds its way down Eternity Street

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
So, ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Mardi Gras Indians chant in the streets at sundown
Spyboy meets Spyboy, and Big Chief meets Big Chief uptown
They circle and sway in their rainbow colored feathers and beads
They prance like peacocks, children of slavery freed

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
Roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

The Krewe of the Crossbones parades into the midnight sun
They march through the fire and come out beating homemade drums
While the French Quarter Queens in their high-heeled drag disguise
Sing "Over the Rainbow" 'til Judy Garland quivers and sighs

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Flambeau dancers light the walkway to Jean Pierre's
There's a party tonight and all the girls are gonna be there
Sipping wormwood concoctions, drinking absinthe and talking trash
It's a red carpet, black tie, all night, celestial bash

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel
I said roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel
Yeah, roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Here is part of an interview with Guy Clark and Richard Skanse about Cinco De Mayo in Memphis.

Guy Clark Q&A
By Richard Skanse

It's from lonestarmusic.com

http://www.lonestarmusic.com/guy_clark_06.asp

Where does an idea for a song like “Cinco de Mayo in Memphis” come from? That's such a unique scenario.

Yeah. Well, it was Cinco de Mayo, and I was sitting here in my writing room with Chuck Mead, who's the lead singer with BR5-49. And he said, “Man, it's Cinco de Mayo today.” And I don't know why, but it just popped out of my mouth: “Cinco de Mayo in Memphis.” It just had this ring to it, you know? And kind of a contradiction. And I just got this picture of these Mexican deckhands coming off a towboat into Memphis on Cinco de Mayo. Just totally imaginary.

I love how the song opens with “Meanwhile …” It just cuts right to the chase!

Yeah! [ Laughs ] Yeah, the song's funny. Jimmy Buffet's [sic] already done it — he jumped right on that.

I'm betting that Whoop De Doo will be the Math Sux/Simply Complicated type song on this one.

Just a stab in the dark at this one.

There is a Mark Knopfler song titled Whoop De Doo.

Lyrics are:

if i’m over the moon
it’s because i’m over you
a day at a time
and i’m tickety-boo
i don’t carry on
the way i used to
whoop de doo
whoop de doo

if i’m doing great
it’s because when i get home
i don’t go straight
to my answerphone
and the tears don’t come
the way they used to
whoop de doo
whoop de doo

so many little things
are so much better now
they were only the little things
anyhow

if i’m over the moon
it’s because that’s what i am
funny that once
i used to give a damn
and i’d do anything
in the whole wide world for you
whoop de doo
whoop de doo

anything
anything you’d want me to
whoop de doo
whoop de doo

It's kind of a bluesy song.

Song sample here.

I wonder if Jimmy is doing all these covers?

Elvis Presley Blues is by Gillian Welch.

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
And put on a shirt his mother made and went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
And he shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby
Like you never seen

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
How he took it all out of black and white
Grabbed his wand in the other hand and he held on tight
And he shook it like a hurricane
He shook it like to make it break
And he shook it like a holy roller, baby
With his soul at stake

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
He was all alone in a long decline
Thinking how happy John Henry was that he fell down and died
When he shook it and he rang like silver
He shook it and he shine like gold
He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul

He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul, what's wrong with me?

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
Put on a shirt his mother made and he went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
He shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby
Like he never seen
