Ray Charles "screwed his fans" by singing Georgia on My Mind?
Bing Crosby did us a disservice covering White Christmas?

Heck, I've never heard of the trio of guys that is credited with writing Bama Breeze, but since hearing the song, I've checked out out their websites and listened to their other stuff....things I never would have done before Jimmy recorded their song. It works out well for everyone...songwriter, recording artist and listener.

What I've heard so far, I like. A *LOT*.... I suspect this album takes a little more listening... It seems more introspective than Jimmy's usual.....

I cannot *wait* to hear the rest. Not because "OMG JIMMY'S PUTTING OUT A NEW ALBUM!!" I'd like to think I'm not in that camp.... I'm looking forward to the rest because the songs look great, I can't wait to hear Jimmy and the CRB's spin on each one, and I've truly liked the ones I've heard so far.

Honestly? I think the "I'm going to hate it and it's liable to suckk because it's mostly covers" crowd is as distasteful as "I'm SURE I'll love it just because JB did it" folks.

Wait and see... THEN decide whether you like it or not.

Jimmy isn't screwing the fans.. if you buy it you are screwing yourself :D

Me, I am gonna screw myself trust me. I just may not like it as well as some of the previous stuff he has done.

So Cubbie again, bite me.

Dude! I would rather hear Jimmy Buffet sing Boats To Build over Jerry Jeff Walker ANY DAY. Same goes for Semi-True Stories, Mexico, Scarlet Begonias, Window On The World, and many more.

It's been decades since he's put out an album with nothing but his songs on it, and they're great songs.

Did you feel this way when he first recorded Banana Republics? Steve Goodman wrote that one, but it's a fabulous Buffett tune.

My advice... settle down, have a beer and listen to Stars On The Water (The Buffett cover version. It's better)
Mac does a better job on Semi-True Stories. Something about the third-person observation thing

six years ago when all of this was still relatively new to me I did not give two craps if it was a cover nor did I know it was a cover unless it was a hit before. Only since becoming a "true fan" did I ever care but now
I'm putting myself back in that old mindstate because, hey it's new music from Jimmy and after all he's near the end of his career.

Funny thing about this board. No one can't criticize buffett without getting flamed.

Ray and Bing never charged $126 for tickets, and there albums had all originals on them, except for a few albums. Buffett has done the past 4 alumbs with 4-5 originals, and the rest covers. Blah. Just be open to criticism with Buffett...

Not at all man, my opinion makes sense, and isn't reaching. We have so many fake parrotheads on here that 'live the dream', and really don't care about Buffett's music, and these people will buy anything that has buffett or is buffett related. Which is fine, but I am not one of them. I expect great music from a great musician.

It doesn't matter if it was popular or not, its not the artists' original work (the one that is covering it). It's not a cover if it hasn't been recorded before....

Jimmy is screwing his fans by putting out a new album?? PU-LEEZ....

Just because he didn't write them, doesn't mean they're not great songs, and Jimmy always manages to put his own spin on each song. Songwriters who don't happen to also be singers would be SOL if others didn't record their songs, and we'd all be the poorer....

Who p*ssed in your wheaties today?

No one 'p***' in my wheaties, I am just tired of buffett screwing his fans over. He doesn't care about us 'fans'. We just pay for his lifestyle and fuel his plane(s). How does he explain the ticket hike the past 3 years? For what? Forgotten lyrics, 'senior moments', bad [country] album(s), too lazy to write songs, and borrows others to play. Man, what a life Jimmy. I think the product is just watered down compared to 5-10 years ago. Maybe I just expect a lot...

I wouldn't hear Boats to bulid b/c i dislike county. And Jerry Jeff Walker is way overrated as a musician.

To your Banana Republics comment, its a great song, but still is a cover..that's when he did 1-2 covers a album, and it was also 1974 when he was trying to establish himself as a musician, he doesn't have to do that now. He just chooses too.

Most of you will post at work this morning, so I am looking forward to the replies of my posts!

Again, I love Buffett's music, just lately he's been mediocre, and as a fan, and customer...I don't think I deserve it. I deserve much better for the hard earned money I pay for cds, drinks, shows, anything with the enterprise of Margaritaville.

So vote with your wallet.... Don't buy the CD, or go to the show if you don't feel you get your money's worth....

And I still stand by the sentiment that we can't realistically say whether we like the entire album or hate it.... we haven't even HEARD it yet.....

All very true. I'll just get the cd from oink, and keep on taping the sirius shows. It's just an opinion.

You're right about your last comment, what about if I love the album? I'll eat my words...but based on Buffett's consistency with the past albums, it'll be over-produced, and mediocre.

They probably didn't, but if they were around today they would be getting some (well-deserved) premium prices for their performances.

Jimmy's last three regular studio releases have had their share of other composer's songs on them. Fine by me, Far Side of the World is one of my favorites. Banana Wind, certainly a "Buffett cd", is one I don't listen to much at all. To each his own.....I enjoy hearing him "Buffetize" a song I'm familiar with, and enjoy it even more when he features a songwriter that I might have otherwise never heard. And I don't think it's lazyness, just a path his career has taken at the moment. He certainly has a lot of irons in the fire, so what's next? Nobody knows, and that's part of the fun of it all.
