It doesn't matter if it was popular or not, its not the artists' original work (the one that is covering it). I am a bit bum out that he is doing this, but as usual buffett is screwing over his fans, and we still eat it up! He could put $hit on a plate with a M'ville logo, and people would still buy it.
It's not a cover if it hasn't been recorded before....

Jimmy is screwing his fans by putting out a new album?? PU-LEEZ....

Just because he didn't write them, doesn't mean they're not great songs, and Jimmy always manages to put his own spin on each song. Songwriters who don't happen to also be singers would be SOL if others didn't record their songs, and we'd all be the poorer....

Who p*ssed in your wheaties today?

I wonder how much the band gets paid??

Bing Crosby did us a disservice covering White Christmas?

Heck, I've never heard of the trio of guys that is credited with writing Bama Breeze, but since hearing the song, I've checked out out their websites and listened to their other stuff....things I never would have done before Jimmy recorded their song. It works out well for everyone...songwriter, recording artist and listener.

as I recall Hound Dog was released/recorded Prior to Elvis

My take on it is this...

For what it is worth, here's my 35 cents...

JB is not a hippie anymore. He doesn't live in a boat, he hardly ever drinks and he doesn't do cocaine.

He's a businessman. Think Warren Buffett with a tan.

He makes great products, and people like them.

He's a tropical version of KISS, just less vocal about being out to get money.

Money is pretty good to have. As someone who doesn't even own a bed or a dresser drawer, I can tell you that I would sing other people's songs if it meant cashola.

Ok......Elvis wrote very few of his songs, yet he was the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Jimmy doesn't have to do anything. He can quit if he wants to, but he doesn't (thank god). I'm happy he records songs, and tours. It doesn't have to be an original song written by Jimmy. If the song fits into his reportoire so be it. I love his music (written by him, or not). I wish he would record some of the songs written by Jim Morris. I would love to hear Jimmy's spin on them. Songs such as 'Laid Back And Key Wasted, or 'Southward' would be perfect for Jimmy. As long as he keeps recording and touring I'm happy.

Wow, someone else got mad about covers and people actually engaged in it! Glad it wasn't me for once.

What I've always liked about Jimmy's covers are when they are songs I'm not familiar with not only does it sound, ha ha, like Jimmy Buffett wrote it but also I go and find the album it originally came out on. Like Willis Alan Ramsey. And Steve Goodman. I attempted to listen to whatisname, the dude who wrote Stars On The Water, Rodney Crowell, but just didn't like it. And so on. The Neville Brothers' Why You Wanna Hurt My Heart is excellent.

One thing about recording covers being cheaper than originals - if you want to record them faithfully, you just learn the original version and do it. If you want to make it yer own, you first learn the original version and then modify it. From listening to California Promises I can certainly say Jimmy modified it - he made it better in this instance. In fact all of the Goodman songs Jimmy covered are better than the originals. Ballad Of Spider John I'm somewhat on the fence with - Willis' version is superb and Jimmy's is very good but I still lean to the orignal.

Either way it's costing money to record a song.

But if it weren't for Jimmy Buffett and The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and various other acts that I like for doing cover tunes my record collection would be less than half of what it is. So there's 15 covers or whatever on the new record. So Jimmy is sharing what he likes. You want originals, play something from the early 1970s - the first two records have all originals on them that Buffett wrote or co-wrote. I don't think there's one Buffett album that has all originals on it post Barnaby.

And covers or originals it ain't cheaper to do either. It's not the cost of building The Last Space Shuttle either. Most of the money spent for recording an album is for the dude/dudette to go down the way and bring back some food and a six pack. And the rest is spent on hype. And y'all need to stop saying "how bizarre" it is that this new record is coming out on RCA. It wasn't that bizarre when LTC came out on RCA. Y'all were able to see the videos and the full page ads and Rolling Stone articles. That's RCA doing that. Did anyone think it was bizarre when DSTC, Calaloo and BHOTM came out on Island Records? I thought it was rather appropriate. Jimmy Buffett on Island Records. How f**** perfect! Alas, he had to go to something really slow instead, a halfsunken no wind in the sails Mailboat Records. RCA to the rescue. Surely LTC would have sold maybe 250,000 or so, gone gold maybe, just with Mailboat and the guest artists. But because of RCA, a couple of videos, some singles, guest artists and lots of ads - LTC sold over a million and is still selling now and will probably be his biggest selling album ever. At least in terms of true sales - everyone knows CILCIA and SOASOAS did not go platinum! They just said it did because they could! Fruitcakes and LTC are his biggest sellers in modern times and certainly have outsold any 1970s albums in realistic terms.

Let's see how TTWWY does. Based on the sound of Bama Breeze it's going to be another great album and I'm looking forward to combining LTC and TTWWY into one giant album.

agree!!! and each album seems to get less impressive. There is just no real wow on the CD's anymore.
Agree here!!
Its just that we would like him to write some really good songs like he used to. Great story telling ones. Its almost like there is little effort going into the last couple of albums. I'm not going to run out and get it either. I'm going to listen first. The songs I have heard have been ho-hum so far.

Someone said he could put out a plate of sh*t with Margaritaville on it and people would buy it....too true...that was funny!!
Someone said something about good products.....your not talking about the rot gut tequila or the crappy shrimp or way over priced blender are you??

Sorry....just agreeing with the na-sayers..... :D
