I think we went through this whole discussion not too long ago....

As a "cover" is a song previously recorded by another artist that reached a significant level of popularity (e.g. a "hit"), stating the new album contains 10 covers is very likely over doing it a bit.

Perhaps he's wanting to give more recognition to other artists and songwriters at this stage of his career. If that helps to keep him interested in recording and performing, great. I'll judge it after the new album is out.

more like easy money....

don't have to take the time and energy to write something that's actually good enough to record. 2, 3 days in the studio and he's got 200,000 in easy sales and another 500,000 with minimal advertising.

most artists who do 'tribute' or 'cover' albums bill them as such...

I think that the reason cover songs so often work out ok for Jimmy is because of his band, the coral reefers. The steel drums, awesome percussion, fine guitar playing and the lovely background vocals of Ms. Nadirah Shakoor make a fine foundation for any well written song, regardless of who wrote it.

I think that's fine. I like Jimmy's interpretations of other writers' songs just about as much as I like him on his own stuff. Some examples include:

Uncle John's Band
Banana Republics
Mexico
Brown Eyed Girl
Window On The World
Southern Cross
Pacing The Cage

I'd have no problem listening to a compilation album of those songs and many more. I just want MORE MUSIC!

I heard some audio interview with him basically admitting it. He is perfectly happy cranking out just 4 or 5 originals per cd. 10 "covers" might sound bad to some, but when there are 15 tracks I am still very content.

   I thought this was gonna say the cd jacket will have 10 different cd covers... I know other artists have done multiples in the past. That would really s***! How could I pick just one???

hoping powers that be don't read this and opt for that on the next one!

I just look at it as he chooses to put his energies elsewhere...writing books, producing movies, etc. To me, LTC was more innovative vs. lazy.

2 or 3 days in the studio? I have studio experience. Whether Jimmy writes it, or whether someone else writes it, arranging, producing, recording and editing are all tedious, expensive parts of the process. Why would recording a cover song be easier or cheaper that recording your own? It could be argued that it's more expensive and takes more time to record someone else's song than your own.

MORE MUSIC, PLEASE

Well, to me...a cover is a song that you are playing that you did not originally write. It doesn't matter if it was popular or not, its not the artists' original work (the one that is covering it). I am a bit bum out that he is doing this, but as usual buffett is screwing over his fans, and we still eat it up! He could put $hit on a plate with a M'ville logo, and people would still buy it.

Dude! I would rather hear Jimmy Buffet sing Boats To Build over Jerry Jeff Walker ANY DAY. Same goes for Semi-True Stories, Mexico, Scarlet Begonias, Window On The World, and many more.

It's been decades since he's put out an album with nothing but his songs on it, and they're great songs.

Did you feel this way when he first recorded Banana Republics? Steve Goodman wrote that one, but it's a fabulous Buffett tune.

My advice... settle down, have a beer and listen to Stars On The Water (The Buffett cover version. It's better)

It's not a cover if it hasn't been recorded before....

Jimmy is screwing his fans by putting out a new album?? PU-LEEZ....

Just because he didn't write them, doesn't mean they're not great songs, and Jimmy always manages to put his own spin on each song. Songwriters who don't happen to also be singers would be SOL if others didn't record their songs, and we'd all be the poorer....

Who p*ssed in your wheaties today?
