Maui Feb 07 - Thinking about side trip

My wife and I are going to Maui in Feb for 10 days. This will be our 3rd trip there. Any suggestions for side trips. We've been to Oahu and Kauai for a couple days each, 6 years ago. Thinking about an overnighter to the Big Island. Any suggestion would be helpful, including new or hidden treasures in places we've already been.

Go to The Big Island and watch the lava flowing a dusk. Spend the night either in the park at the lodge or in Volcano Village.

Have you seen the Warren & Annabelle show in Lahaina? or taken a hike through the lava flows near La Perouse Bay?

If you don't already scuba dive, treat yourself to a weekend course and go a little deeper than snorkeling. It's a completely different world when you can take the time to be underwater with the critters. And in February, the whales are migrating. When your diving you can hear them call to each other.
Nothing else like it in the world.

My suggestion would be to spend more than a day on the Big Island! We spent a week there and it wasn't nearly enought time to see all the neat stuff there. The volcano is awesome after dark. There are also some great hikes there during the day.
A trip to the Bong Brothers smoothie shop is aways fun!

I love the big island almost as much as Maui.
It's different . . . but I love it. Enjoy!
One of my favorite things to do in Maui is to go to the little, bitty church in McKenna .... listen to the conch blow and the ocean's right outside the window. I'm not much for church stateside, but I love this one.
Then, take a picnic lunch and go down the road a piece to Big Beach.
Have you been upcountry? We toured the winery the last time we were there.
I love Paia. The windsurfers are fabulous. And Willie has a place there that's got a great lunch.
Have you eaten at Alexander's? One in Kihei - right on the main strip and one in Lahaina.
I loved seeing Ulalena at the theater in Lahaina. The drums alone are worth it, but it tells the story of the islands.
That's about it for me, other than the usual tourist stuff, whales and Haleakala at sunrise.
Go to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center website and if there's something you'd like to see, by all means go! There were some people on our whale watching trip who got Jimmy tickets the day of the performance. Not a bad seat in the house ... fabulous venue.

I didn't see anything in February that I recognized, but I'd keep checking, because you just never know who might show up on that stage!

Oahu the traffic is horrible... I'd easily suggest Molokai, Kauai or Big Island... tranquility.

My side trip of choice is off to visit the US National Park on the island of Ofu, in American Somoa. It's peaceful, untrampled, unspoiled and wonderfully beautiful.

You are right ... the most amazing sounds you will ever hear! It is what made me get my diving certification !
My boyfriend Tom and I will also be in Maui in February. February 20 - 28th to be exact. We are staying in a friends condo on the beach in Kihei.
The other place for GREAT breakfast is the Five Palms Resort ... they have a french toast served with cocnut syrup and candied ginger ... YUMMM
If you head to Paia ... Make a trip to Mama's Fish House ... a little pricey but the food and the location make up for that.
Seven Sacred Pools is nice if you are going to take the road to Hana.
Me ... I just like to drive, stop, get out, and go diving or snorkeling ...
just enjoy the surroundings!
Looking forward to seeing and hearing the whales in February!!
