Being from the home of the Calgary Stampede, I can't help but listen to (and like) country music ... at least some of the older stuff. Not really big on the "new country", with the exceptions of Pat Green and Radney Foster and a few others. Johnny Cash, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Jerry Jeff were what I cut my teeth on.

NEVER used to like it.. But in the last couple of years, I've given it more of a listen. Don't like the older 'twang', but more of the 'country rock' and story telling, too. :D I'll listen in the car while flipping stations here and here. :)

Ummmmm, no.

Sorry, outside of Jimmy and the Reefers (Mac, PM, Jake, etc.) I go for classic rock, and alt rock.

LOL.....Yeah, I turned down the volume while waiting though. My husband, who knows and shares my dislike of county, thought I had lost my mind until I explained what I was waiting for. (He doesn't like JB all that much...but tolerates quite a bit.)

Actually, this continued country association worries me. I mean, yeah, I know it's where he can make the most money and get the most accolades and exposure (all of which are fine with me)....but I want JB and his intelligent, witty lyrics.....not county music.

being a DJ I listen to and play almost anything.
I just did a party last Friday that was primarily 70/80s country and rock and roll oldies. BTW, it was the best crowd response I've gotten.

As a kid in the 70s and 80s, I was raised on The Oak Ridge Boys, Ronnie Milsap, Statler Brothers, Hank Jr, Juice Newton, Willie,Waylon, David Allan Coe, Alabama, and the like.

Jimmy being classified country should come as no suprise to anyone who has most of his albums.

I agree completely. These coverastions about Jimmy "turning Country" slay me! This "trend" for Jimmy is absolutely not something that is new to him. In my mind, th vast majority of his music can be classified as "Country". Even as he started migrating away from the country sound (after years and years of being completely ignored by Nashville), there always seems to be at least one song on his albums that has a definite twang to it. It seems that he is finally cracking that Nashville shell a bit, too. CMT showing a video depicting someone smoking a joint.....?? I never thought I'd see the day!

I hate to tell ya, folks.....If you like Jimmy, you like country music.

The very early albums were country, and obviously LTC, but I don't think you can classify the majority Jimmy's music as "Country"... There may be a twang here and there, but he's from the south, so there will definitely be a little twang. If I had to classify Jimmy, it would be more "island folk rock" or something... It has some elements similiar to some country music, but you're going out on a limb saying Jimmy is country... What country singer takes a ukelele player out on the road with him?

That being said, it doesn't surprise me that LTC and TTWWY are country-oriented... Yes, that's where he started, and it's where he's gotten recognition from lately. It disappoints me, but it doesn't surprise me.

I love country music. The good stuff, I believe, is now called "alt-country" or "Americana". You won't find country on country radio anymore.

This is what I like:

Buck Owens
Dwight Yoakam
Billy Joe Shaver
Mike Stinson
I See Hawks in L.A.
Gram Parsons
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Ray Price
The Mavericks (Raul Malo)
Waylon Jennings
Hank Williams (Sr. & Jr. & III)
Conway Twitty
......and many more......

I'd classify him under tiki music section. Better yet, I'd say he falls nowhere other than the Buffett style. He wanders all over the place.

My brother-in-law has a band that gigs around Massachusetts. They play mostly light rock and pop from the 70's and 80's. He decided to learn a couple of Buffett tunes to play for me, and asked, "Did Buffett start as a country artist?" I asked him why he asked, and he said the structure of most of the Buffett songs he looked at was a country structure. I can't say, because I know squat about music theory, but here's a musician who knew very little about JB, but immediately pegged his music structure as "country"...

i like a limited amount of C&W but the women pholk at Rancho Frognot like it a whole bunch so i'm exposed to a fair amount. Personal favorties off the top of my head are Robert Earl Keen, JJW, Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard. Also some 70s country like Willis Alan Ramsey (is he ever gonna do a 2nd album?) and Rusty Weir.

The nice thing about having a teenager is keeping up with music trends....she's really expanded my horizons and I've found that I really like a lot of the "new punk" and alternative stuff......we're going to see Panic at the Disco next month!
