Replica Jimmy

Post by Cubbie Bear »

I have always (IMHO) found singer "impersonators" to be rather, well....smarmy, odd, creepy, peculiar, strange, abhorent. I have steadfastly refused to ever see again any Elvis Immitators, Beatle Wanna-bee's, etc.

Hoever, I have noticed quite a few of you and several who's opinion I respect, will go see Jimmy acts and actually travel some distance to do so.

Does anybody else get creeped out by people who pretend to be somebody else? or maybe I ought to re-up that therapy thingy

I went to a bachelorette party once where the male stripper was an Elvis impersonator. It was very creepy and he was soooooo not attractive even if he wasn't trying to be Elvis.

I'm glad I was very pregnant so it was easy to stay out of the room to avoid him paying any attention to me.

there's a big difference between someone pretending to be Jimmy and someone covering Jimmy's songs, often quite well.

someone actually pretending to *be* Jimmy? No thanks.

but a good tribute band playing his music? why not?

I didn't answer the poll Cubbie, because none of them fit. A performer doesn't necessarily have to do original stuff. I think most tribute bands already have full time jobs, and the band gigs are extra. They don't have time to do original stuff, but still want to play fun music.

in biloxi a couple of years ago, i got free tickets to go see an elvis impersonator.

he was a little creepy. but there were women in the audience who followed this guy around the south... so i'm torn on what was more creepy. the guy or the women

I agree. This guy's really good:

http://www.tomwatt.com/; he usually plays the night before the pittsburgh show at a hotel and also in the parking lot the day of the show.

btw, no offense meant to anyone. I agree, that people singing songs by an artist and those who totally mimic someone are two different things

no offense taken. :D

I just wanted to point out that I think there's a big difference between impersonators (creepy) and those who play the same tunes. :D

I always found it a little creepy when people pretend to be someone famous.
There is this band up in MA called Changes in Latatude and the lead singer tries really hard to be like Jimmy to a point where it starts to annoy me. He dress like him and does this head bob thing just like Jimmy, goes barefoot etc. It's kinda weird. Just my 2cents

Mings.... :P

Actually, I feel quite the same as SGH answered above... I don't know if I would actually travel to see a tribute/cover band, though. They'd have to be playing pretty close, within a couple hours' drive.

As for an "impersonator", I wouldn't pay to see one, although they to have comedic entertainment value sometimes...

Years ago while in Vegas we saw a Jimmy impersonator. Very cheap to get in and $1.00 margaritas. He was decent, played some non SYKBH stuff. But on the way in we noticed a poster for thier Neil Diamond shows, it was the same guy :o
Would I travel to see one? No, but if the crowd is fun, why not go when local.

This is like having the option to see THE TEMPTATIONS!

Yeah, right.

I *think* all of the original ones are dead. (There might be one left, but I think he passed recently.)

Would I pay to see the new guys mangle MY GIRL? Pummel PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE? Clammor CLOUD NINE?

I don't think so! :D

I wouldn't want to see an impersonator, but I definitely like to hear people cover JB music, and often they put their own spin on it - sometimes it sounds great, and sometimes it doesn't, but at least they're not just trying to copy....

Depends how tacky they are. We have a band here called BABBA and they pretty good .... so I would probably go see them ...

(cause I love ABBA!!)

Went to a "elvis" wedding in Vegas once .... wasnt a real one - part of our coach tour and it was the ultimate in tacky .....

I'm going to see the Landsharks tonight, the ad bills them as a "Jimmy Buffett tribute".

But hey, it's a free show 15 minutes from the house, how bad could it possibly be?
