For stand up comedy jokes back in 1980? I'm not into racism at all but that's an odd reach. It strikes me that one of the major party candidates (whoever the NAACP may have endorsed) may be feeling threatened by Kinky.... I notice the article doesn't mention Kinky being Jewish (along with the "bagels with Jews" comment).
And what an odd thing to break right around Jimmy's fundraiser....

If you follow this column, you know I’ll probably vote for Kinky Friedman for governor. This week, his opponents are painting him as a racist for “insensitive” remarks.
Interestingly, the Republican frontrunner tended to ignore Friedman until the challenger’s poll numbers took an upward turn. Now the masters of spin are scouring Friedman’s writings and tapes of his performances. Kinky being Kinky, it’s not hard to find offensive remarks.

exactly. basic Repub attack politics.
