the cousins up in the northwoods near Lassen Peak say Shasta Lake near Mount Shasta (always snowy!) is the most beautiful houseboat vacation, but we have no hands on experience

Just a note on swiming off the back of houseboats. We were looking into is a few yrs ago and my wife found an atricle about people getting overcome by the fumes from the engine due to the low profile or the boat or something like that when swiming off the back of houseboats. If you rent be sure to ask about that.
