Is it just me or is there a fromula for politicians/celebs who get into trouble.

1. Ignore any mention of problem/issue

2. I may have acted inappropriately, but will continue with my career

3. Due to circumstances beyond my control and for the benefit of those around me, I will resign

4. I am sorry if I have offended/hurt anyone (never a real apology)

5. I have a problem (translation..It's not my fault.) I am seeking help and checking into......

Even when they try and own up, they still don't own up.
and there is also:

6. Immediately lawyer-up...

Even if the page weren't underage it's a clear cut case of sexual harrassment...the underage part makes it really sick. I just don't get how he could have been "investigated" on this a year ago and is just resigning now.... It seems just like the wayward priests of the Catholic Church...it's only "wrong" if it becomes public. Absolutely pitiful.

This is the current headline on cnn.com about this issue:
Greenfield: Could Foley's follies hurt the GOP?
EXCUSE ME???????

I don't give a SH*T whether his actions hurt a party or another politician. Why isn't the headline about the hurt he caused those young pages, some of whom will probably need significant help to get past this....

EXACTLY! Saying "I'm sorry you feel that way" (or something to that extent) is NOT an apology for your actions! I can't believe how many people think they have apologized when they say that.

Let's be real about this...

Pages are hardly youngsters.
They're HS juniors who are generally 16-17 years old.
Legal issues aside, they know who they are, they knew about Foley (according to reports)
Those who participated/conversed with Foley had their own agendas, too.

I'm as worried for them as I am for those "poor young victims" who had to have sex with their HOT young, blonde teachers.

Nope, not buying it. In both cases, warped adults took advantage of kids.

Me neither. I work with this age group, and even the best and the brightest of them are not always capable of making smart decisions. They are still very vulnerable, subject to getting things totally out of proportion, and certainly deferring to authority.

I really can't believe you made this statement. Think of the realtionship at hand, a U.S. Congressman, and 16 year old Page. Think of the authority, underling issues here. You are also still dealing with minors.

OK
I 'm hearing what you all are saying, but I just think that the relationship aspect is a little different.
This perv, Foley, was , in effect, trolling for WILLING partners in his sick game.
Those that participated were not even in his presence when the "act" took place.

Let's just see how this shakes out, as far as "exploited" pages stepping forward... :-?

What a first class A-HOLE this chump is.
First of all, he destroys the life of some poor young boy who probably was taught to respect government leaders, thereby trusting this north end of a south bound jacka$$,
Secondly, WHATEVER these morons do, they need to realize that, as Republicans, they're going to be given media anal exams 24/7, and, as Republicans, will be held accountable for their actions,
AND, in the end, he comes out with this "I'm sorry" crap. It's enough to make you vomit.
Then he conveniently blames the alcohol.
That's just giving booze a bad name.

I hope they put him in jail with a 6 foot 10 inch, 280 pound cell mate named Clovis.

Meeting with reporters Monday, Hastert said his aides and Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., heeded the wishes of the parents of the former House page, who wanted such questionable e-mails to stop but didn't want the matter pursued. Shimkus and the House clerk told Foley last fall to cut off all communication with the former page, who lived in Louisiana.

Hastert says neither Shimkus nor his own aides saw the 2005 e-mail, noting that it was far less sexually explicit than the electronic messages that ABC News revealed last week.

This is the part of the story that people are omitting with regard to the parents wishes. Now going forward I think Hastert did the right thing by having the FBI investigate the matter completely he is even having the FBI investegate his office. Foley is a creep and diserves whatever is coming to him. Some congressmen are calling for and end to this "page" program alltogether because of past problems. As a father of a 16 year old girl this is very unsettleling to me as she goes out onto the workforce. How are we suppose to keep our children safe from people like this?
