If I think that person's done a good job, I'll vote for them. If not, I won't. I won't withhold a vote for someone only because they're running unopposed.

Before children and when I was renting, I did not vote in school board elections.

a. I didn't feel that someone without kids should help make decisions for those with.

b. since schools in Iowa are mostly paid by property tax, I felt as a renter I shouldn't make decisions for those impacted.

As a parent, home owner I now cast my ballots in school elections, even though my children are in catholic confinement. FYI, I voted for the new schools, impacting my taxes, with no impact on my children, because it was right.

I have seldom if ever missed any other election since 1975. I have never registered by party (even though I am often called a tree hugging liberal democrat on this place....wino)

As a childless ba$tard who has rented, rents now, and may rent again:

a) I have to live in the community and deal with the products the school is putting out on the street.
b) I have a feeling that taxes levied against the assessed value of the apartment house or complex are not being absorbed by the owner so by extension, I pay property taxes on a pass-thru and if I don't vote, it results in taxation without representation.

We had similar issue with new schools in my area. My keets are gonna be trapped catholic too, but I supported the new school. We had a TON of senior citizens (about 80% of protestors) and people with no children (10%) and even groups with kids in public schools against it!?!? Better schools are better for community and that is what voting should be about, not just what is best for you.
And there is nothing wrong with hugging a tree once in a while :o

You don't think that the property taxes are passed down to the renter in their rent?

Taxpayers all have a stake in their school system.
