There are a few applications that work well for OSX
2 that I use are RadioLover(($15) and iRecordMusic($25), both from
a company named Bitcartel software and reasonably easy to use
http://bitcartel.com/index.html
Another program that has a good reputation is
Audio Hijack($16-pro version$32)

For editing and splitting shows I use Audacity
it is free and available here

Just to fill in some gaps...
Goldwave is free (pay voluntarily later if you want.) It also has a scheduler to start recording when you tell it to, and can record any sound you play through the computer.
Also has a lot of features available, although it takes a little study to learn how to use them.
Either way (Goldwave or Total Recorder) good luck with the project. Any of us will help - just ask.

You can 'evaluate' the software free of charge, however an audible 'click' will be inserted into a recording every minute or so... so you can try it out, see if you like the actual interface/features, but i wouldn't record anything you want to keep until you've paid and activated a copy...SharkOnLand wrote:Tropic_Al wrote:Question for techies. It seems Total Recorder is the way to go. Which version though ? Standard or Pro ? Latest version is 6.o I believe. Are there free versions ? I checked the website & standard is $18 or so. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I use Audacity, a free progam, but I also record from the line-in input directly from my Sirius receiver... I don't need to worry about system sounds for that reason. I don't know if Audacity will filter out system sounds or not, haven't needed it.. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
I have used Audacity to record from RM. Is there a way to record when away from the computer? Like a timer set option kind of thing? I'm truly technologically challenged but sure would appreciate some help with this. I'll be at work at 6PM so would have to record it. Thanks!

I've got Goldwave recording RM, one test the sound was good the other lousy (sampling rate of 6000). At a sampling rate of 44100, a one minute file ended up at 100MB.
Any other "rookie" tips??
Thanks!

10 MB per minute is for wav file is quite Normal !
Record for 2 hours as a wav file.. That's 2 GB!!
Wav is the best to save... maybe need to burn a DVD for the show!

128k/m mp3 files are about a meg a minute, about 1/10th the size of the same file in wav/cda.gingerbreadman wrote:Are you sure you're recording was not 10MB?? If you're more interested in Jimmy's comments than having a pristine recording of the music (you're getting the cd anyway), you can try a few things to reduce file size...
...record in mono instead of stereo, that'll cut your file size in half.
...Goldwave by default wants to save everything as a .wav file. To record as a compressed mp3, open up a new blank 120 minute file to save the show. Immediately do a "save as..." and choose mp3, as Ringling says that's about a MB a minute. You can reduce this further by going the mono route, or dropping down to 96 kbps instead of 128. Again, for a voice recording this might be all you need. Now you've got your blank mp3 sound all set up, just hit the record button!
...one note, Goldwave doesn't come with an mp3 encoder bundled with it. Without it, you can't save as an mp3. They have a good one available right at their website. Look under "optional downloads".

Yes, 128K mp3 is much smaller and is probably good enough with RM.com.RinglingRingling wrote:128k/m mp3 files are about a meg a minute, about 1/10th the size of the same file in wav/cda.gingerbreadman wrote:10 MB per minute is for wav file is quite Normal !![]()

I know I have a tendency to go way past the 12 step program... But, I save it as wav/PCM since that's what my editor likes to work in. Then I do all the editing and tracking and finally convert to 192K mp3. I think that the Sirius source sounds better at 192K. Finally to save space, I burn all the wav files to a data DVD, and delete them from hard disc.
I know you use TR, and it should be able to do 128K with a "default" TR install, if you have Windows XP, or have a third party encoder installed.conched wrote:I record only in mp3 128 kbits/s format since I have a storage issue and just want to hear that one particular comment or song again and again.
Yes, TR does not come with an mp3 encoder either, but they say ( http://www.highcriteria.com/tr_ext_mp3.htm ) TR can utilize the mp3 encoder native to Windows XP, or the "Lame" encoder that can be downloaded from the link kindly provided by chippewa.chippewa wrote:...one note, Goldwave doesn't come with an mp3 encoder bundled with it. Ooops ! Told ya I'm a beginner!
Anyway.............I have OS 10 and thought it would be a really cool thing to do, you know, burn stuff off Radio Margaritaville to listen to while driving to work. So yesterday, I downloaded iRecordMusic and then clicked on Sirius and I have a password with them and a three day free trial. I've gotten into the Listen Online window on Sirius.com and there's a rectangular box that says "now playing" and the Radio Margaritaville logo channel 31 is showing in the box. But nothing happened when I clicked on the buttons.
Sooooo, I looked around and somewhere it says I need Flash, so I've downloaded that...........And then somewhere it also says I need Microsoft Media Player 9? (Is that true still since they're "off the bus" as Jack Kerouac would say?)
Anyway, here's where I'm stuck............I'm supposed to "Choose an Application" to load Media Player 9? Well, I don't know what that means and there's a long list of things I could choose. But, I also know I could really blow it here bigtime and then I'll have to haul my tower down to the computer store and pay someone 80 bucks an hour to undo my experiment!! So, I'm stuck!
So, anyone with some advice for this hula girl? Have I done the right stuff? Hoping to enter the 21st Century before the decade's over!
Thanks!

A couple of questions for you
1- Which Version of OS 10 are you running?
2- Have you purchased iRecordMusic or are you
using a trial version? the trial only runs for 15
minutes before stopping.
If you haven't purchased it yet, you might want to
download and try RadioLover from the same site.
The trial version will only run for 30 minutes , but that
will let you try it and see if you like it. I don't think that
you will be able to record from the Sirius trial site, but you
can record the RM stream from iTunes and it is a bit
easier to use
3- Have you downloaded and installed Media Player 9?
If you have then when you get the choose an
application to load question, scroll down to The
Windows Media Player and select it.
If you are going to use iRecordMusic
You should go to the Bitcartel download page
here http://bitcartel.com/download.html and download
and install the recommended components. Especially the
Flip4Mac WMV Components. With this installed you should
be able to use Quick Time to play Windows Media files.
I am not familiar with the workings of the Sirius site, but
it is a good idea to do a couple of short trial runs first
to be sure that you are recording what you want to.
If you need more help, send me a PM and I will try and get
you up and running.
