WHY NOT USE THE BAND TO WRITE SONGS?????????????????????????????????????????????

when was the last time utley, mcdonald, mayer brothers, etc have contributed.its been a long time.and over that time, the amount of covers has increased!!
Maybe utley, mcdonald, mayer brothers want more $$$$ & rights to the tunes them JB is willing to give up?

although thats a possibilty i doubt it.the mayer brothers and roger guth wrote a ton of songs with jb between off to see the lizard and banana wind.now there song writing is basically none existent.its after beach house on the moon everything changed. just like utley, mcdonald, and even greenidge used to contribute.maybe because bhotm wasnt such a well received album? but i think its because of the double edged success of 5 o'clock and ltc that jimmy feels he has to be in the top 20.and by doing that it means doing covers,a lot of covers.somebody once said "when u cover a song your half way there to success." jimmy bought into that philosophy to.the last jimmy buffett album was really banana wind.after that its been hints of his greatness in writing with a few songs on each album.dont get me wrong im not complaining, just stating my opinion.and although jimmy has basically always done covers, it was only 2-3 per album.not 10-11.its just adds up to more cover songs in concert and less jimmy buffett and the coral reefer band songs..

In the interview on RM last evening Jimmy talked about taking Roger, Peter, Will Kimborough and ?? with him to St. Barths for a couple weeks to write some songs that are on the album.

I personally enjoy most of the "covers" JB chooses to record.
He has introduced me to a large number of other artists that
way, since I usually seek out the originals to listen to. I think
the way he shares his taste in music is an asset, not a big
shortcoming to criticize. It's not like he's rehashing a bunch
of stuff we hear by someone else everyday... usually.

And just maybe, this is what Jimmy wants to do....
did you notice He was talking about someday
Recording at least three other songs..

Jimmy doesn't live in Key West anymore.. or New Orleans
and He is not a broke artist living on the road anymore either..

and to be honest...... I don't want to hear songs about living on Park
Avenue... :D :D :D

How many of these topics on the same issue do we need? Don't like that he's doing so called "COVER" songs? Then don't buy the album.. there's enough of us Parrotheads on BN who will buy it , to pay for Jimmy's drinking habit.

:-? Most folks who buy it will do so because we enjoy the music, NOT to pay for Jimmy's 'drinking habit'.

My question:

Those of you who are complaining about Jimmy not writing enough of the songs....WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF "DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL"?

Most people hate it. However, it is the only album on which EVERY SONG was written by Jimmy Buffett.

Well if he cant write his own songs, he should just quit and stop the whole "cover" argument that bothers so many people. I am sure people are tormented at concerts going "he cant play banana republics, he didnt write it" I mean come on, JB should be more like the great entertainers such as Frank and Elvis and do all their own stuff!!!
Now lets find another dead horse to beat, I'm thinking the "when is he gonna retire" thread needs new life
M.K. "You should never use any of the 13 bad words!"
S.T. "I thought there were only 7 bad words?"

When you take the 'album' for what it is, a soundtrack to a musical, it holds it's own. He wrote those songs for a musical, so they're meant to be taken in context with the storyline, characters, etc.

And to tell you the truth, I like it. It's not in a regular rotation in my 'normal' listening, but I'll put it on every so often...

But I'm also not complaining about the covers. He takes lesser-known songs and makes them accessible to a bunch of listeners. From this new album, I've only heard one song (that I can remember). Jimmy doing covers gives me new insight on certain artists that I never would have known about or listened to previously.

Well this seems to have gotten really stretched out. First off, I do like DSTC and I think it's a very well done album with a great spirit and it certainly is not a typical Buffett record, which is really great. It has some silly, not bad (Math Suks, Cultural Infidel, Turning Around, Take It Back, etc..) tunes on it and some great tunes on it - it's basically a soundtrack to the play and it represents that very well indeed - it has an opening, deals with the characters in the middle and it has an ending. I listen to it more than some other Buffett LPs, especially Mango and Riddles.

And of course, the best song Jimmy's written in EONS with Island Fever.

I think the answer to the question of Is the song known as Jimmy's that another songwriter wrote - it's more associated with Jimmy. Or becomes associated with Jimmy. Like how Rock'N'Roll Music is associated with The Beatles even though it's a Chuck Berry tune. It was a hit FOR The Beatles, just like Hey Good Lookin' and 5 O'Clock were hits FOR Jimmy.

I remember a few years back at Jazz Fest Jimmy finished the show with Biloxi. You look at all the songs Jimmy covers on record they're great songs and that's obviously his whole point of covering them. I won't go near the Tripping Hillbillies or whatever tunes because I've never heard it or any of the other never before played covers he did on the A Salty Piece Of Land tour.

I don't think the reason he doesn't use the Mayer brothers and whoever else for writing has anything to do with money - I'm sure they get paid the union wage for everything because the money for writing comes later. Maybe it's more about whatever he feels like doing.

In the new album program on RM Jimmy talks of taking Peter, Roger and Will Kimborough to St. Barths for a two-week song writing session...some of those songs being on the new album.

Don't forget about Roger Guth. He wrote a song by the title of "Blue Guitar". You may have heard that on FSOTW. He also co-wrote "Good Guys Win" with Mac, remember the Hoot Soundtrack from earlier this year?

yes i have the albums and love the contributions roger guth has brought to the table the past 18 years.especially his work on off to see the lizard..blue guitar is fantastic thats why i question why the coral reefer band doesnt have more input and or songs on the newer albums.cause they all have written great songs for and with jimmy.i mean jimmy still works with matt betton who hasnt been a member of the band for 20 years.remember will jennings??? how many great songs did jimmy and utley write with him? think about the writers jimmy wrote with on fruitcakes besides the members of the current band.jimmy and guth wrote frenchman for the night which is one of may favorites...the band has so much talent, jimmy should be using them and not buying coversongs like werewolves in london...

I was listening to an interview the other day with George Jones (I can hear the groans) and he said the reason he wrote so much in his early days was because he was hungry, and when he got successful, he lost his hunger. I think in order to write it, you have to live it. And when you're successful, you just don't have as many exciting and interesting stories. No one wants to hear about the problems you have with your maid and your Bentley.
