Hubby and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary this spring (april)....I would love to surprise him with a trip to Hawaii....always a dream of ours...but I know NOTHING about Hawaii, other than what you see on television....so give me some direction....pretty open to anything....the only "must do" would be rent Harleys at some point and take a ride!

Been on two trips to Hawaii. First trip we went to the big island (Hawaii) and stayed in Waikola at the Hilton Waikola Village. It is probably the nicest place I have ever seen. The resort is pretty expensive but is amazing, you never have to leave if you dont want to. I would recommend on the big island going to see the volcnos by helicpoter or doing some kind of a sunset cruise. Other than the activities at the resort there is not much to do on the big island in the way of night life, however it is great if you want to just RELAX. We also did Oahu on our first trip (Waikiki) This is where all of the night life and activity is on any of the Islands. Waikiki is by far the biggest city on any of the islands and the traffic is rediculous, however if you stay at a hotel on the beach you really dont need to drive. I would recommend renting a car for a day and taking the drive up the coast to the North Shore. (dont take H1 go all the way up the coast it about a 2 hour drive with some of the most breath taking scenery any where on earth). There are some great little restaurants on the north shore and if you are there in the winter the waves will be huge. You can also go to Dukes which is located at the Outrigger on the beach in Waikiki OK food but a fun place. I would recommend staying at the Hilton Hawaiin Village or any of the hotels on the beach in Waikiki. Sheraton, Mariott, or the Outrigger. There are lots of cool shops and market type places in downtown Waikiki and lots of great ocean adventures to go on ( we went swimming with sharks I would highly recommend this). Hope this helps

I agree... go to Maui. incredibly beautiful
But an advisory.. the road to Hana is an incredibly tight and windy road.
At least, that's the way it was when I was there 20 years back, and I doubt they could've improved it much.
It's not an open road like you find in Utah. It's windier than any road I've driven in Big or Little Cottonwood Canyons.
Gotta be comfortable with your slow-turn riding skills, for sure

I am comfortable on those kinds of roads.....actually, they are the kind I prefer!
I hope to firm things up by December....hubby is being a bit resistant to spending the money.....

If you are in Waikiki on a Sunday don't miss Duke's on Sunday. Henry Kapono is a great performer. I am sure if you have the new album you recognize the title "Dukes On Sunday" as it is the last song on the album.
I am supposed to be at the Hilton Waikoloa Village next week, but if it did get damaged during today's earthquake I will probably be in Waikiki for the show next Sunday.
There is also a great Seafood Buffet every Friday night at the Sheraton Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki.
Have fun.

Leave him at home and take me!
And I second the suggestion of seeing Erik The Whaleshark in Lahaina...that is a must!

I was just there.... If you do get a car... traffic is horrible.... Waikiki is extremely busy.... out of nowhere the beach appears ... and is horribly crowded. Visit the other islands before visiting Oahu and Waikiki.

Well in case you want to play golf, here's a nice link from Yahoo sports I was just reading:
Playing Golf On Maui
Even if you don't, a certain someone got a mention under the Where to Eat section...
The atmosphere at Tommy Bahama Cafe (3750 Wailea Alunai, 808-875-8893) is a little Jimmy Buffetesque, but there's no better place for a pulled pork sandwich and a cocktail at the bar.

We honey mooned in Hawaii in 1986 and have been back five times since. We love it but becareful not to try and see it all on your first trip. We took ten days and island hopped from Oahu to Maui to Kauai on our first trip. We have not made the big Isl yet, some day we hope to.
Oahu is the best place to go first, it is fast paced and you only need about 2 nights. you have to do Waikiki and Dukes/Moana surf rider for drinks at least unless you can afford to stay there. Take the short hike up Diamond head.
Snorkeling in Hanauma bay just north of Diamond head is awesome, a state park. You can catch a shuttle bus from any beach hotel. Plan to do this on a day you go to pearl harbor.
Save your Luau experience for Maui our personal favorite Island. the road to hanna is a bit over rated in mho and it rains like crazy on that side of hte island. spend some time on old town lahaina and either do the old lahina luau or the marriot luau on kanapalli beach. we like to stay at the westin or the hyatt on kanapalli beach. The recently renovated sheraton at black rock is beautiful if you can afford it. Snorking there is also very good
Kauai is or at least was very peaceful. We stayed at poipu beach and drove up to where they filmed Blue hawaii with Elvis. you should get acar on both maui and kaui.
Lastly try and go during whale season Jan to Early April. it is spectacular
Hope this helps, have a rgeat tyime planning
