Well, this Saturday is the 2006 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This has always been the perfect blend of the two things I love most: warm beach weather and triathlon.

There is much speculation to who might win, and an American hasn't won in several years. Then again, racing on the hot lava fields in the already hot Hawaii weather leaves much room for the unknown. And the rough waters of Kailua bay can and has ruined many a racers day. Well, I cant wait to see who crosses the finish line on Ali'i drive first this year. Do any other Phans follow this? Just wondering.

Better yet, anyone competing in it?

I love this. I can't see it in person but I watch the televised version. I don't think it's televised live, but alot later. These people are so impressive and there's always a great human interest story. The finish is something and the women are getting closer to the men's times.

Is it going forward on schedule? Kona got shaken pretty well by that earthquake a few days ago....
I follow it loosely. It fascinates me that people can actually DO this....

Wasn't there a Gatorade commercial about a Ironman Triathelete who collapsed feet from the finish line because of dehydration, then started using Gatorade and consequently won, telling America if they drank Gatorade, tehy can win the Ironman?

According to the Ironman web site "
Contingency plans are in place for Saturday’s race, but at the present time no alterations to the event or the course are planned.
Don't forget the Bike Course goes north from Kona to Hawi and right by the epicenter.

I was introduced to the Ironman back in the early '80's when it was featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports.
San Diego seems to be the training grounds and home of a lot of past and current Ironman competitors,
and many of its' champions settled here in the county.
There was an article recently talking about how on a 6:30 am jog on the North Coast's Cardiff beach shores
you would likely run across 6 past winners of the Ironman!
My training, lately, has me in fine and fit condition to ...continue handing out water to next year's marathon participants
hey... it's football season
