Set List Aggravations! (Why oh Why)
As ginormous parrothead, and Buffett concert goer. Yes I'll be at the Vegas show on the 28th...I can't help buy shake my head at Jimmy's setlist after each show. I can't for the life of me explain or comprehend some of his selections for the live shows. I know that every musician out there is going to play the hits because the public expects it. (Margartitaville, Volcano, Cheeseburgers, Sailor, Pirates...etc.) I'm actually okay with that part, it's par for the course. However there are some songs he's been playing just about every show that boggle my mind because the s*** and he has so many better selections that I think all you true fans would agree. I've been to show before, and that's primarily who is there, people like you and I. Here is what I'm talking about...
-Pencil Thin Mustache...UGH! Very corny, and over-rated.
-Why don't we get drunk...Another slow burner for me, yeah the sing along is why he does it...but it sounds like something from the Bob and Tom Show.
-Desperation Samba...This song actually has grown on me a bit, but I still don't like it much and he plays it every show! I can think of a 100 others I'd rather hear.
Now with last night's show he introduced "Elvis Pressley Blues" a song I don't mind, but honestly is probably the weakest from the new album and he chooses to play it.
Last complaint is do more originals...I can do without the Dixie Chicken, or Werewolves, etc.
I know you can't please everyone, but I'm pretty sure deep down you probably agree with me. Why not throw in there instead...Tin Cup Chalice, In the Shelter, Barometer Soup, Cuban Crime, Havana Daydreamin', Kickin in Second Wind, Manana...etc. Otherwise the songs that only Buffett Tribute bands seem to play. I know he's played these in past tours but it's been a while.
Just something I needed to say...I love TTWWY, especially the middle half of the record. Cinco De Mayo is probably my favorite.
For the record...I'm still going to show, and appreciate all the songs, but at the same time get frustrated. Sorry for that.
JB Rulez none the less.

Got to agree with you
I was looking at the set list and it is a bit thin but I think maybe..... He does alot of the older music due to the ummmm drinking capabilities of his crowds and thier ability to sing along or heck even remember the words.
I know personally I can remember margaritaville a whole better than Bama Breeze after a few drinks.
Just my 2 cents

A "ginormous parrothead" and a "true fan" would probably know the title of the song is Kick It In Second Wind.cecoleman wrote:As ginormous parrothead, and Buffett concert goer. ... I think all you true fans would agree.

Weirdly enough most of the songs you chose I really don't care that much for. I do however love Pencil Thin Mustache no matter how many times I hear it and Dixie Chicken? Geez , I haven't heard that nearly enough. I would die to hear the entire FSOTW collection live. Or how about Jimmy on a stool with just him and the guitar doing Nautical Wheelers? See, all us Parrot Heads have our own idea what the MAN should do. That's what makes the Parrot Head nation so much fun. I think Jimmy does quite a bit of what JIMMY wants to do....after the obligatory ones for the phans. I am just happy he continues to do them.cecoleman wrote:As ginormous parrothead, and Buffett concert goer. True. I'd go see that.CoronaMargaritahead wrote:well dont go if you dont like the songs.. he'll get money with what ever songs he'll play.. he could play twinkle twinkle little star and sell out arenas
I think the core of the "problem" here is that the man has so much outstanding material, he'd have to play 14-hour shows (at LEAST!) to get in all the best stuff. I'd made attempts to put together my own "Best of the Best of Jimmy" CD's for my roadtrips, and finally had to settle for "Jimmy 1", "Jimmy 2", so on and so forth. Just too much good for one short time period.

Just for the record...I know the song is "Kick it in Second Wind"...that was just a fast typing abbrev. Just as I know he doesn't have a song called "Cheeseburgers"...but for short anyway.
I do and will go to the shows because honestly, the songs are like pizza even if it isn't great its' still pretty good. I'm going with the what If I got to choose approach...and I know most would agree with what I called out whether you'd admit or not. He is allowed to play what he likes, no doubt and I have much respect for that. I'm just boggled sometimes by the selections as there are so many consensus better options I wish he'd opt for. There shouldn't be any "Pee-break" songs (as many BN's person talk about) with such a vast catalog. I've read so many here critiquing the new album, and reading that most people tend to identify "Elvis" and "The Phone" as their least favorite, and funny how both were played last night. Yet know "Breath in" or "Duke's" or "Reggabilly" or "Nothing but a breeze" that everyone seems agree are great.
I'm not attacking...I hate attackers, I'm just critiquing.

I'd personally like to see him do more songs that he has never performed or rarely performs even if he chooses to do several off SYKBH and a few new ones. One thing I really like that he does it when he takes an older song and puts a new twist on it, like reggae version of Floridays.
Either way I tend to agree with SGH (scary I know) I am just glad he is performing and if he is having fun, he will continue to perform longer.
