we adopted a stray barn cat that was at least 2 years old. we didn't know her name so we had to give her one. it's been no problem. i did read in some animal guide book that you should name your pet something with 2 syllables. it's suppose to be easier for them.

Thanks all! I started this thread last night and then the night became very long. I wanted to name her Jager but Mike seems to think it makes us sound like alcoholics so Cocoa just may stick. She is a very sweet little girl and likes to cuddle and give kisses. I love that she is not a biter, even when playing. Puppy school is my next venture. Keep the name suggestions coming ... we figure we have a few days before we have to settle on a name.

Ditto on the one-syllableness aspect. That's what you'll be using the most.

Our last dog was a golden retriever named Corky (after 60's surfer Corky Carroll) which I always shortened to just "Cork". Our current golden retriever is named Buccaneer but it's always shortened to "Buc".

As far as the name change ... they'll respond to anything as long as you feed them :D . We adopted our current dog from a golden retriever rescue organization when he was over 4 years old and changed his name from "Bullet" to "Buc", mostly because I didn't like the negative aspect of his previous name and we wanted to give him a new start. He responds just fine to his new name.

I got my dog when she was over a year, also from rescue, and changed her name - and she had no problem with the switch either. I don't know what her original name was, since she was a stray that was found in some lady's yard, but the pound named her "Sammie". I named her Maisy after Dr. Seuss's book "Daisy-head Mayzie" although I didn't like the way he spelled it.

My friend's chocolate lab is Tika. I also had tried Sierra and Shyla before settling on Maisy, and I liked Sienna too, but Maisy is black and white, so I didn't think it fit!

Randi.
Why?
Because she looks exactly like the lab we had a few years back.
Miss her something awful.

Great picture, she's a beauty.

Did you tell him he was marrying a PH and he should probably get used to that?  Our black labs are Guinness and Vader- we look like Star Wars nuts or alcoholics (or both). Some nerds think we named her after Alec Guinness (Obi Wan from the original Star Wars).

Puppy school is great- it's not that the dog learns that much, it's what you learn about how to deal with your dog. And if it's any incentive, after our class, Guinness is a dream on a leash.

And if you don't already know this, Kongs are GREAT!! And the peanut butter scented bubbles are so much fun too-we played for a solid hour with those!
