we adopted a stray barn cat that was at least 2 years old. we didn't know her name so we had to give her one. it's been no problem. i did read in some animal guide book that you should name your pet something with 2 syllables. it's suppose to be easier for them.

Thanks all! I started this thread last night and then the night became very long. I wanted to name her Jager but Mike seems to think it makes us sound like alcoholics so Cocoa just may stick. She is a very sweet little girl and likes to cuddle and give kisses. I love that she is not a biter, even when playing. Puppy school is my next venture. Keep the name suggestions coming ... we figure we have a few days before we have to settle on a name.

Ditto on the one-syllableness aspect. That's what you'll be using the most.Dutch Harbor PH wrote:We've always named our dogs something that can be shortened to a single syllable.
Our last dog was a golden retriever named Corky (after 60's surfer Corky Carroll) which I always shortened to just "Cork". Our current golden retriever is named Buccaneer but it's always shortened to "Buc".
As far as the name change ... they'll respond to anything as long as you feed them

I got my dog when she was over a year, also from rescue, and changed her name - and she had no problem with the switch either. I don't know what her original name was, since she was a stray that was found in some lady's yard, but the pound named her "Sammie". I named her Maisy after Dr. Seuss's book "Daisy-head Mayzie" although I didn't like the way he spelled it.
My friend's chocolate lab is Tika. I also had tried Sierra and Shyla before settling on Maisy, and I liked Sienna too, but Maisy is black and white, so I didn't think it fit!

Maizey would be a good name for a Yellow Lab...comtnfish wrote:I got my dog when she was over a year, also from rescue, and changed her name - and she had no problem with the switch either. Did you tell him he was marrying a PH and he should probably get used to that?Crzy wrote:Thanks all! I started this thread last night and then the night became very long. Puppy school is great- it's not that the dog learns that much, it's what you learn about how to deal with your dog. And if it's any incentive, after our class, Guinness is a dream on a leash.
And if you don't already know this, Kongs are GREAT!! And the peanut butter scented bubbles are so much fun too-we played for a solid hour with those!
