Hey all... Mike and I just got a new little one... a 12 week old chocolate lab. The breeders named her Cocoa and she responds to it but it is not my first choice.
First question is do I just keep the name since she responds to it...
Second question, if I change the name what do you suggest..
Thanks!!!

Awww!! Congratulations! If you don't like her name, she's little enough to change it. How about Kona?

Change it to Kokomo...
It's close enough and is definitely more tropical.
She's cute. I say keep the name or one similar. It's made an impression on her and will always mean something to her.
In teaching my dog the essential commands, I worked so much on 'sit' that to him it means "pay attention!" Now if I want him to stop whatever he's doing, like running toward traffic, I have to yell, SIT! and it works.

Her name isn't bad for her.
But a few more ideas...
Punkin, Oreo, Godiva, Coco, Bosco..
You might need to have her for a few more days to decide.

I also like Coconut... Dogs are so goofy that it would probably work.

Congrats on new addition

- she is so sweet. I don't know anything about dogs personally but I have several friends who adopted dogs (lots older than this one) and successfully made a name change. Go for a new name you like and that fits the dog. Unfortunately - I don't have any ideas for a new name - but lots of good ideas from previous posts.

We've always named our dogs something that can be shortened to a single syllable. Caldera is shortened to Cal ...the single syllable makes it easier for the dog to learn and is easier to respond to....our 8 month old is Mojo Negra (Black Magic).....Mo for short....(Black Labs of course!!!!!)
When I was a kid we had Rena, Tar, Cee, Pye (short for Pyewhacket), Chee (short for Chespa De maristica)....All Black labs....
So....
- Island Breeze...call her Breeze...
- Sweet Coco ....Call her Sweet...
My cousins chocolate is Zu-Zu

Run a few tests!

When she's not paying attention and she's just minding her own, just say any random word, but do it in the
exact same tone of voice that you've used when calling her Cocoa. If her ears are still perking up and looking at you, then you can probably change her name without her being too confused.

my dog took about 5 minutes to start responding to his new name after i adopted him from ridgeback rescue. he was about a year old and it was probably his 3rd name.
???? -> danny (his foster family name) -> kinja.
The rescue people encouraged changing his name as way for him to put behind his past trauma.
