I could see that

Listen for the gasps from the crowd
And watch his face how he realizes uh oh that wasnt good
It may not be what he meant, but it's how it came out

unfortunately, not every joke goes as planned. Now, imagine if Shrub had tried delivering the same line. It would probably end up with him making Dan Quayle look like an intellectual giant...
OK, as a left-leaning libertarian (I'm not a Democrat), I call on Sen. John Kerry to apologize to President Bush for insulting his intelligence and the failure of his administration.
(I still didn't hear him say anything about the military.)

It is interesting that the person slapping Bush for being "intellectually deficient" received lower grades than Bush at Yale.
The fact is that the GOP and Bush were waiting for some Democrat to stick their foot in their mouth so they will have something negative about the Democrats. Kerry obliged and now all you are hearing is this tit for tat going on between Bush and Kerry.
It takes the heat off the big picture and could possibly sway some undecided votes in the direction of the GOP.
It's politics - not an afternoon tea.

Do you mean aside from his implication that those who are in Iraq did not study or do well in school?

Yup... seems hypocritical if Kerry is stupider than Bush.

I mean his reference to "stuck in Iraq" refers to the current administration only.

And his statement that those who do not study hard go into the military is an insult to sevicemembers everywhere.
But given his grades at Yale maybe he was making a blanket statement based upon personal experience.

Have we heard any democrats criticize skerry for what he said? nope.
It's a boost for the reps in the coming election.
just once, I'd like to see someone farther to the right of center than "moderate" capable of delinking the "The War in Iraq was a mistake, and the methods used to get the US into it a crime" statement from the concept of "If you oppose the war in Iraq, you hate the troops."
Just once. It would be so freakin' refreshing.

My son graduated high school in 2005. Funny I told him basically the same thing. Stay in school, get good grades, further your education and do not join the military.

I'm on borrowed internet time, so no time to read the entire thread. I agree entirely with G1.
There are not enough words in the human language to express my outrage.
My opinion: yes, it was a slam against the administration (and in that sense, politics as usual, not such a big deal) and also a slam on the military (and in that sense, it is a huge, nasty thing). I wonder if the Senator from Massachusetts attends his constituents' funerals when they are killed in Iraq, or if he feels they are too ignorant to bother.
I am so far beyond outraged, ytou have no idea.......

Perhaps he did not intend to malign the military. But his inabiliy to articulate his point, or his joke, did in fact describe the people "stuck in Iraq" as uneducated. The people "stuck in Iraq" are the military. McCain, various service members from Private to General and many other people have come forward demanding an apology. He can try to spin this any way he wants. But his lack of ability as a public speaker turned what may have been intended as a slam on Bush into a slam on the entire military of this country.

Interesting, graduated from college with BS in Accounting, minor in Psych. Commissioned as a 2Lt in the Army. Served through my Captaincy. Studying for my CPA. Am I uneducated?
