Headed to Rome

Yep, OttoCal & Jon are headed to Rome for a week around Thanksgiving. We will be consuming as much wine, pasta, gelato & cheese as humanly possible, but would love any suggestions or tips on your favorite things to do, places to go, or potential day trips.
We are going to visit all of the obvious sites, but would appreciate any 'been there, done that' or other insider tips.

Haven't been there, but you said gelato, so I came a runnin'!!
From what I've heard, you'll end up eating more gelato than you should. But since you're going Thanksgiving week, you'll be like the rest of us eating more than we should.

Don't stay in American hotels in Rome, stay in Italian hotels or even consider renting an apartment. This will allow you to get more of a feel for Rome. Don't rent a car if you aren't leaving the city. If you aren't in shape to walk for miles every day consider renting mopeds and definitely use the mass transit whenever possible.

Thanks- we are staying at a tiny 14 room Italian Hotel in the city, and having driven in Italy before, have no intention of reliving that experience.
We are thinking Pompei might be a fun day trip.
Mmm, gelato.

Do as the Romans do.
Have a great trip!
Italy is probably el-numero-uno on my list of European countries to visit.
