Luggage ?

Post by mommar »

I'm in the market for new luggage..............and what better group of people to help me out here.

Believe it or not I still have my orange hard-sided, non-rolling luggage from the '70's :o

I LOVE it, cause I can find it soooooooooooo easily at the airport, but I'm reaching the stage in life where it's becoming a bit too heavy for me to lug around

Suggestions please...........I really don't travel much, so I'm thinking that soft-sided will be ok, but a plastic grocery bag won't cut it either :-? Is there anything I should know before I head to the luggage store.........anything that I should/shouldn't buy. Help Please

I know someone who's used this site before with a lot of success, Mo. :)

I would always check how well the seems are sewn/constructed... I've had some that tear away at the corners. :)

I used to travel a lot on business, and have used all kinds of luggage. If I needed one, do everything bag, it would probably be something like this:

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores ... at=4523-tn

Several sizes available. The rolling feature is great. I like the LL Bean version -- I have nothing to do with them, other than I buy lots of their stuff and I love the guarantee -- but you could probably find one elsewhere.

I don't know what your budget is, or how much you travel, but I have seen very nice luggage pieces at Marshall's. (I don't know if that store chain is national or not.) In the past I have seen nice Hilfiger sets in bright colors there. I just bought my 10 year old a piece of Diane VonFustenburg (sp) from there and it is a really nice, well constructed sturdy piece. I don't think you could go wrong with anything from Land's End or LL Bean either...good luck! :D

mo, we can help you with that. you know how much dave travels. sig brand or swiss army are excellent and you can find them at tj maxx or mar-shalls. david got his at the tj maxx in plaistow. it's a 21'' rollarboard which is good for a few days of clothes.

don't bother with the designer ones that are at those stores. they don't last...and we know that for sure. with lugggage, you get what you pay for.

Absolutely the best is Delsey's super light line, which is indeed found in department stores but is nearly always on sale. It really lasts, is not nearly as heavy as LL Bean or Land's End, and is really light, with pockets and all kinds of features. We have travelled years and thousands of miles with these and they hold up and hold stuff like nothing else. Was put on to them by a pilot. A large suitcase cost about $90 on sale, and the whole suitcase weighs 10 pounds... nowadays when they will charge you for extra weight, that is really an advantage. We have tried at least 6 different brands of luggage over the last 15-20 years, and this is the best. Delsey is the best.

I travel a lot for business and this has become my staple:

Available here. There is also a cheaper version available (The "Original One Night Stand"). I love it because it fits in the overhead bin on the tiny planes that I have to fly.

If I'm going away for a long time or the wife is coming along, this is the bag for me. (Unfortunately, they didn't have the "Aloha" series when I got mine. :()

It is available here. Large enough to pack everything and still has wheels for when I have to carry it.

Thanks for the tips everyone...........This is definitely going to be a tough choice........ :) I do like the LL Bean print, but I gotta wait til next weekend to get to their store  And now I'm wondering does it really make a difference, the inline type wheels as opposed to the twister wheels........ahhhhhhhh confusion :-?

Twister wheels seem like they would be easier to manuever (and the people in line in front of us coming back from Vegas loved theirs). We just have inline wheels, and those aren't even bad when you compare them to the wheeled luggage of even 10-15 years ago, and especially when you compare them to NO wheels!

If you're going to the store, check the outlet store, too. I got my latest rolling duffel there in Sept. ( on the end leg of the MV trip you were so helpful with...thanks again :D :D ) for 60 or 70 bucks for the extra huge size.

Hey thanks, J....that rolling duffle matches my backpack. 8) I might need that for my Christmas travels.

I have several different suitcases, my main one is swiss army. I like it except for the fact that you can't rest another back on top when wheeling it, the bag will just slip around the handle. Major design flaw. You have to use the piggyback strap system, which isn't nearly as efficient in my opinion. When I got it no one had red suitcases...now they are practically as popular as black. I swear I might get the hot pink lands end stuff...methinks that won't be as popular as other colors.
