Looks like the Giants are signing him for one more year. $16M? Whatever.

So much for that theory

Actually, I think it was right. I didn't see anybody else signing him, certainly not for the kind of $$ he was looking for. Surprised the Giants didn't lowball him, figuring he wouldn't get any other offers.

Only other team to show interest was Oakland. He just wanted too much money.

According to a source, the Sox are flying back to Boston with Daisuke Matsuzaka and agent Scott Boras on board.
Thank god this whole thing is over and Dice-K is finally a Red Sox. Im just confused as to how the mighty Boras demands $100 mill yesterday and seems to have agreed on a 6/$60-66 mill today. That doesnt seem like something the "most powerful man in baseball" would do

Daisuke Matsuzaka has reached a six-year, $52 million deal with the Red Sox, SI.com's Jon Heyman has learned.

I know people around the country have always poked fun at how Sox fans hang on every single event that happens with the team during the season and the off-season and I personally like that about following this team. But even I am amazed at this, the Boston Globe website (through a DirtDogs link) is tracking the plane carrying Dice-k. I would have to admit this takes it a little too far...

I heard this morning is that if Dice-K didn't sign the contract, he wouldn't be welcome back in Japan (not physically but psychologically). He would have been seen as very greedy. The Asian mentality is that you look out for the good of the group first. (Yes I can say this because this is the same mentality in India too) He HAD to sign with the Red Sox.

He should have played another year in Japan and signed with the Yankees in 2008.

That wasnt an option. He wouldnt be a free agent for 2 years. He would be posted again next year and the Sox most likely would once again bid way above anyone else with no intention of signing him purely to keep him away from the Yankees. That is the whole issue of why the Sox had so much leverege in these negotiations.
Now that this is finally over I am very excited for a DiceK- Beckett- Papelbon- Lester rotation core for the next 5 or 6 years (knock on wood)

Now there are rumors that are saying that Clemens will return to the Red Sox next year, with a similar deal that he had with Houston, EXCEPT that the Sox will expect him to play more of the season than did Houston.

According to reports today his Japan team the Lions said that if he didn't sign with Boston they would not have posted him again next season and they would have only paid him the league minimum contact. That would have meant the earliest he could have played in the US is 2008. Once the Red Sox got to meet with him face to face Tuesday night it took only a few hours to come to an agreement. Boras is a great agent if you a player but I think it is safe to say Boras blinked first.

Interesting note: If Dice-K is in fact the #2 starter, he will be the Red Sox starter for the home opener. Guess who the Sox are playing: the Mariners. Yes you guessed it, the 1st batter he will face: ICHIROOOOO... almost too good to be true.

It is a 4PM game and I have tickets for that game but I think he would be #3 behind Schilling and Beckett.

Glad the Dodgers chose a familiar Tiger name for us here in Michigan....
Nice hire indeed....may have to make a few runs up 75 to 10 West & catch some LOOOOON BASEEEEBALLLLL!!!
Meg, is the stadium pretty much in town, by the freeway or what?
The stadium is a minute or two off the freeway...1 minute or two from downtown Midland.

Midland is a small town! However since the ballteam/stadium have the support of The Dow Chemical Company, it will be a VERY nice stadium.
It will be a straight shot off US 10. The freeway ends by becoming the road that leads to the stadium. Couldn't be simpler.

Sounds like a road trip (phlocking? is in order. Should we make a week of it and hit the Lugnuts, Beach Bums and Whitecaps, too?

I heard the same...except the Lions were going to send him to the minors and that would cause him to lose his free agent status for next year!!!
