"Werewolves of London"

Is it just me, or has Jimmy's version of this song grown on you over the summer?

I've noticed that although I was not crazy about it when the "Hoot" soundtrack first came out, after hearing it twice live over the summer I really enjoy listening to it (both live and studio versions).

Anyone experience the same effect?

still not crazy about it, ranks right down there with trying to cover Dave Matthews. Trying to cover Zevon (unless you have Waddy Wachtel playing guitar with you and you are a cute little brunette named Linda) is a bad idea.

I never got to hear him do it live, I've missed most of the shows online and he didn't play it when I saw him.

But to me, the studio version is just flat, no energy behind it.

meh... I've heard better covers but I've certainly heard some butcherings, too. I'll vote for indifferent.

I know I was intoxicated, but were you not the "Sauce Boss" at the Gumbo pot in the Alpine lot??????

You shouldn't insult Warren Zevon's memory by mentioning Dave Matthews in the same conversation.

Buffett's version on the Hoot soundtrack is just awful. I like it better live, maybe because most of the times I heard it this year Billy Payne was playing piano on it.

I don't care much for it.

RR is right. It's hard to do a good cover of a Warren Zevon tune

That's the point I was trying to make, that I like the studio version more because I've heard how it sounds WITH energy behind it (i.e., Bill Payne).

Speaking of Zevon covers, the tribute album that came out about the time of his death has an excellent cover of "WoL" by Adam Sandler (trust me, it's good) and "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" by the Wallflowers. I was impressed with those two covers, though I've not heard much from the rest of the album.

Not a fan of the original. Not a fan of it on the Hoot soundtrack, but soundtracks are a good place to do unecessary covers.

Was extremely disappointed when it was added to the setlist just before my first show. Come Monday/Cheeseburger/Werewolves made just enough time for a bathroom break at Alpine.

I love the crispness of the opening notes. They just make me happy :-)

It's much better live because the crowd is familiar with it so there's a mutual energy that gets generated. If you listen to the vocals, though, if Jimmy had to howl for his supper he'd starve. I'd rather hear something else, though, so I hope it doesn't become a standard.

In the movie, I really felt it was forced and a great example of it "dragging on" (which was the reviewers' main complaint). The dogs scene had ended and there's an unnecessary clip of the kids running just to get some of the song in there.

was not saying that Warren was a marginal performer and writer like Matthews; was just trying to say that Jimmy sucked covering Dave Matthews Band songs, and he sucks covering Warren Zevon. The only that sounds worse than Werewolves of London is Scarlet Begonias.. put those two together back to back in the set list and I would think about killing myself to get away.
