I can see where this "memorial" would offend those who don't tolerate dissenting viewpoints or protests, and whose freedom to do so is guaranteed by the Constitution.
Those who blindly follow today don't want to see anything but boots marching,
hear anything but "You're doin' a heckuva job ___________!! (insert any Bush moron appointee's name here) and say anything.... PERIOD!
that is what's truly sad...
At this point, in this illegally induced quagmire by the most incompetent POTUS in nearly a century,
I say, God speed to the swiftest possible redeployment of our brave soldiers stuck in the Bush war.

Yet we are still driving. Though I think my next car will be a hybrid.
What amazes and saddens me is the number of people who feel that any form of disagreement with the government is tantamount to treason. First Amendment, anyone?
Loren,
who oughta take a scenic drive over the hill sometime before someone takes the whole thing down

Nicely said, I went through many responses in my head that weren't as well said or as NICELY said. I try to appreciate the differences in opinion I see here but sometimes the posts make me want to re-think my love of all things Buffett. My thought was "Your right, let's just follow the President's lead and pretend everything is fine"
And as an aside, this doesn't mean I don't support our troops. I'm just so sad that they are somewhere they shouldn't be getting killed for a cause that was always vague at best.

I disagree with the premise in the title of this thread. These memorials do not exist only in California. People around the country are showing their feelings about the war dead. I know for a fact that it is occurring around here.

I took it to mean that the Protests were the "only in California"
I saw an interview with the lady who is putting them up
She seems not to be trying to make a statement
but more just remembering the troops..
I love this country and I support our troops. But I find myself wondering more and more, How many more must die? Every time I turn on the radio or turn on the tv, some many were killed by a sucide bomber at a check point. And now some reporters are saying that Iraq is falling into civil war. Will we have to fight in that too?
This is NOT a slam on the government, our counrty, our troops , or ANYBODY. Just wandering outloud, when will it end, if ever?

Hear hear.
Nonetheless, I think it crosses the line with the sign which (correct me if I'm wrong) is too big. I don't have so much a problem with the crosses themselves, but I think the sign is a slap in the face to our solders fighting over there. Perhaps, maybe instead of 2,800+ dead, it should read something along the lines of "remember the fallen and support our troops."
Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. I see nothing wrong with memorials to those brave people who have lost their lives. The reminder of how many have given their all is something we all need to keep in mind. The flags in Michigan go to half mast every time a soldier from Michigan is killed. Sometimes it seems like the flag will never make it to the top of the pole again. Every time you see it, its like someone hit you in the gut. Somewhere there is another family who has lost a loved one. Pray for peace.....
