My wife and I did that route last year and drove down US1 and took a shuttle flight back to Ft Lauderdale to make the most of the time there and to spend as much time on the island as possible. Actually after we got there we returned the convertable since it was not necessery and took a cab back to the airport on KW. Advice use mucho sunblock in the ragtop and enjoy.

As someone else said, fly into Fort Lauderdale rather than MIA.
Or, depending on when you're coming, fly into West Palm (PBI) and I'll take you up on that drink if I'm in town
Lots of cool stuff on the drive down US1, plus it's a ritual you have to engage in at least once.
My favorite hotel in KW is Courtney's Place:

Have fun!

Hello again,
I was curious...as far as weather goes--is there a better month?
I am trying to get my boss to give me the mid-to end of May or begining of June off...
Just curious if I can expect decent weather at that time.
Or I could, as they say--- Take the weather with me.

You'll be guaranteed good weather.
Only tropical storms mess with the weather down there.
Even the coldest months (Jan-Feb) never have more than 2 cold days in a row (by Boston standards) .May will preceed the storm season, expect enough sun and plenty of warmth each day of your trip.
We just survived the coldest spell they have seen in a long time, and only needed sweatshirts for two days. Returned tanner than is good for us anyway!!!

Order oysters.

We went to Pepe's for the first time ever just last week, after a local recommended it to us. He said he and his friends eat there regularly. That was good enough for us.
Probably the best "nice" restaurant we have been to in Paradise.
They said they always order the special of the day. I could see why.
Unlike many places that push the special just to get rid of it, the special at Pepe's IS really special!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello again!!
After holding my breath, passing out and begging---
my boss has finally agreed to allow me some time off.
I am coming to the keys the first week of June!
I am pumped!!
I have made a list of all your suggestions... and I'm slowly going to
plot my course.
I haven't decided on my lodgings yet...
but I'm not really concerned... just looking for someplace cheap to
sleep and shower, lol.
I have a lot to celebrate...going to the keys, and getting published
as well...
hell, i may not come home!!

I believe it's Miami where everybody has a cousin.
A shower and place to sleep in Key West will cost you dearly, but it'll be worth every penny.

Congrats! Have a great time!
Published? Details, man (woman?) we want details!
If you like Cuban food, you MUST hit El Siboney. Cheap and delicious.
I second Pepe's for any meal of the day, but especially breakfast. And B.O.'s Fishwagon. And a Blue Heaven breakfast is also way high on the list.

again, congrats, TLM!
Cuban food is a little like Mexican, but far more subtle flavors, imho. And Cuban bread? If I had access to it all the time, I'd weigh 500 pounds...

Just realized you will not be going til June.
High season ends after Easter, and there will be bargains!
You will do much better just showing up without reservations, as long as you can handle the uncertainty.
Are you flying to S. FL and then driving? If so, you will have that added flexability of being able to check around.
Besides, that allows the option of parking on the other side of A1A across from the beach and sleeping free for at least the first night, depending on your arrival time.
If you are driving through the Keys, I've seen walk in rates of $49 for rooms that people have pre-paid $349 through reservations for the same room, same night!!!!!!!!!!

Problem is.....the tix are with United and United apparently doesn't fly to Key West (at least no flights that we can find). So what would be our best option? Fly to Miami and rent a car and drive the rest of the way? I don't even know how long a drive that is. Or get a different flight from Miami to Key West? And how much do those flights usually run?
Just looking for suggestions, if anyone has any to offer.
Drive, but take the cut-off onto Card Sound Road , avoiding alot of traffic and stop on the way at Alabama Jacks, it really starts the journey off the right way!(besides it's considered good karma)

I've done it solo, with a group of guys, with just my wife, with all three kids alone, with wife and all three kids, with just one or two kids, with a girlfriend (no, not what you're thinking. I mean BEFORE I met my wife).
IT'S ALL GOOD!!!!!!!!
Enjoy!!!

Hello everyone!
Well, I am all set! I have my plane ticket, and hotel too!
I got a fairly inexpensive one, pretty much on Duval...
I'm not renting a car, so I wanted something right where the action is, lol.
Im flying into Miami, and then to the keys, I guess the hotel is only
about 15-20 minutes from there, which is good.
The hotel guy was really cool...he was excited (almost as much as me)
and offered to help me in anyway...

I have been making a list of things i wanna do / see from all your
suggestions here...
just one quick question...
I have heard about a "conch train" ... anyone have any info on this?
where do you hook up with that?
again, any parrotheads who wanna hang out or grab a drink, just
drop me a line... since im solo, i can run at my own pace,
which is cool... as long as you can endure my Boston accent, lol...

A friend of mine from Boston just re-located to Key West this past fall. He's doing fine in his new job and living quarters , and his accent isn't interfering at all
There was someone in this group that said their father has lived in Key West most of his life yet still enjoys the Conch Train!
I've never taken it, thinking it was too "touristy", and that I had seen everything, but after reading that , I think I'll give it a try one day.
