I've been to Great Woods once. My impression is that, while it is good, it isn't as great as everyone claims. It wasn't enough to make me need to return. I'd still rather travel to other cities for other experiences before giving it a second go. But that could just be one experience that wasn't great.drmutt wrote:Getting a lot of recommendations for Jone's Beach and Great Woods

I've been there twice (2002 and this year) and I agree. In fact, I don't know if I'd even put it in my top 5, it's no better than any number of other venues I've been to. I'd go back because it's a venue I don't have to get on a plane to get to, not because it's all that.CaptainP wrote:I've been to Great Woods once. If people are saying Pittsburgh, which really isn't on the "coast", I have to say Cincinatti. The venue on the Ohio River is cool and Jimmy is always in a top notch mood when he plays the city that he credits as the birthplace of the parrothead movement.
Lots of great places to tailgate. Cops are laid back (unlike Noblesville where they have undercover geeks posing as phans to ticket underage drinkers). Phans are very, very friendly. PLUS a very well organized P H club as this year the club had Fingers play before the show which led to the first Fingers appearance at a JB show in years.
The horse track parking lot is a fun place to tailgate as you can drink coronas/margaritas while they train thoroughbreds.
I can't say enough good things about the great time I had in Cincy...Oh yeah, chances are Jimmy will play "Growing Older but Not Up" because of the Pete Rose reference.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

I've only been to one show there, and the tailgating was pretty good, but the venue was below average.LIPH wrote:I've been there twice (2002 and this year) and I agree. It definitely would not make my top 5, and I doubt top 10.
Jones Beach, on the other hand- without a doubt top 3.

I've seen Jimmy up and down the east coast from mass to fl and (almost) everywhere in between and I would have to say for an overall experience Great Woods is the best. The parking lot is tons of fun- definitely a good representation of what kind of party parrotheads can throw, the venue, I agree is not the best out there- I won't even touch the lawn at a buffett show- but it is outdoors and certainly not the worst, the show itself is usually high energy- Jimmy loves playing there and it shows, and I have found there are great phans there- I find them to be on the average friendlier and just more fun than some of the others places I have been. If I had to *god forbid* limit myself to one show.. it'd be Great Woods. Just my 2 cents

Out of all the east coast venues....Great Woods is the way to go. I read on a similar post last year that someone referred to it as the "king" of all Buffett venues...you just have to go to understand. One of the few places Jimmy still does a multiple-night stand.

I'm with Craiger on this one. We did GW this year, and I gotta say I was not impressed in the least. If it weren't for the lots opening so early, the place would have no redeeming qualities.Craiger wrote:Pittsburgh! Great tailgate scene, pretty location, friendly cops, comfy lawn...
But I'm biased- I live in Da 'Burgh and go to the Star Lake show every year.

And they enforce it every bit as much as the 55mph speed limit on the Long Island Expressway.LIPH wrote:Jones Beach is a state park. It's illegal to have alcohol in state parks in NY.BFA wrote:Jones Beach is neat, but the no alcohol thing in the venue p*** me off.![]()
Never heard of that before at a Buffett show! Any other venues like that?
I live closest to Camden. It's a good venue that's...let's just say not in the most desirable area. But the tailgate is great. Went to Jones beach for the first time this summer; great time, great venue.
Great Woods is supposed to be great; hope to make it there...Someday I will
