Ahhhh, the old debate. Jimmy covered a song other people wrote that was never recorded for an album before.
Got it.

Shouldn't be a debate.
Per Wikipedia: "In popular music, a cover version, or simply cover, is a new rendition (performance or recording) of a
previously recorded song."
Always been cut and dry if you ask me.

Then it is a cover. It's clearly been recorded as I have the Josh Kear version on my iPod.

I think it may be on an album called "The Fifth of July". PM me your e-mail and I can send it to you tonight if you want it.

I'd like to hear that, too. Wasn't that song written for Buffett, possibly being comissioned or something?

I thought that was a "demo version" by one of the song writers vs. a commercially released version by an artist.

yeah that would make sense... was josh kear's version ever released publicly? or would that even change its cover status?

With the advent of download sites just about anything can be "released" these days, but I'm not sure Josh Kear's version was ever released with the intent of it being a commercial/formal recording vs. a "collectible" for interested Buffett fans. I would not consider Bama Breeze to be a cover.

and thanks to google....

this blog essentially states that josh kear has done a lot of song writing and that this song (or so i read it this way) was done straight for Jimmy's new album.
i'm reclassifying it as a non-cover by mr. buffett. thoughts?

A lot of classical music was written eons ago so why someone would want to break up - that makes NO sense. Has there ever been any new classical music written that's memorable? I probably shouldn't ask that since I don't know but I did - I truly don't know. I don't listen to that kind of music except when it's in movies.
What I meant by 'the old debate' - back when people were going off about Jimmy doing covers. Wikipedia is not exactly a source of knowledge. I've always considered someone else's song being recorded by a different artist as a cover no matter if it has been released by the original artist or not. By that meaning it's not original to the recording artist even if it is the first commercial release of that song. That's my take on it.
It really doesn't matter in the end, as long as what's released is good and JB's case it usually is.

If by 'classical' you mean orchestral music, sure, there's plenty of 'new' stuff out there.... There are plenty of composers writing origininal music.
John Williams is the first one to come to mind...

As far as I'm concerned, it's a cover just like Elvis Presley Blues or Whoop De Doo.
In other words, a cover of a song I'd never have been aware of without JB's version.
And that's one of the things I appreciate most about Mr. Buffett's recordings, he
introduces me to GREAT SONGS and SONGWRITERS! I appreciate his taste in music!
(I have the original Bama Breeze on my iPod too.)

Yeah, like I said, in movies. Of course John Williams is a genius.
Does anyone know if Mick Jagger actually did walk through the door and write his name on the wall somewhere on the Gulf Coast?
