Our great little movie theatre

Post by krusin1 »

Not sure this is of relevance or interest to anybody else, but wanted to share my good cheer.

Dear wife, family and I moved to our small town a couple of years ago, and have come to really enjoy it.

One of the neatest things about town is this...

Several years ago, a local family (owns a successful business) purchased, renovated, and re-opened the 1940's vintage, single screen movie theatre. It's complete with vintage neon sign and balcony seats.

Since then, the theatre has been showing movies on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. Only one showing each day, and it's usually a family film. Most weeks, the movie is a week or two old, but occasionally we get one on opening night.

Kids from the local high school run the ticket booth and concession stand. Tickets are $3 per person, and popcorn/soda combos for a family of four totals $9.

So... for just over $20, you can take the whole family out. Our kids' friends are usually there, and it' just a good time for all.

Anyway, like I said, probably not much relevance for everybody here, but it's a really neat thing for our town, and I appreciate the folks who put the theatre back into operation. They're doing it just for the good of the town, and I think that's very cool. 8)

This photo is not our theatre, but it's VERY similar.

That's a nice thing to hear about. Instead of $20 getting two people into the show, plus another $20 for drinks and popcorn.

Of course, my favorite theater is Brewvies, where you can get a meal, including beer and take it in with you to watch the show. The rows are further apart and there is a table for you to put your food and drink on. It is a fun way to go see a movie.

The town my alma mater is in had a small, one screen theater that really struggled. The college, understanding the importance of an active downtown has helped out and they now have a quaint 3 screen theater in town. I love small town theaters (and small town prices!)

Thats really cool!

WE had one in the suburb I was raised in - all the kids would go on a saturday afternoon and you knew everyone there.

We called it the "flea pit"

I went a couple of years ago, and the same man was still running it - and the same lady in the kiosk .... and they still were the only theatre that sold made up orange cordial

it closed last week

The one little town over from where I grew up has something like that. It's from the 20s though, I think. They do shows 2 weekends a month- one classic (Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Dracula, Psycho), then one great older movie (Monty Python... Holy Grail, Caddyshack, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, A Christmas Story).

But the best part is the skit they do before the movie- usually a scene from the movie, then a raffle. For Psycho, they gave away a can of Hershey's Syrup (used for the blood in the shower scene) and a taxidermied crow. For A Christmas Story, the grand prize was a small leg lamp. For Holy Grail, it was a shrubbery.

Hopefully they still allow smoking in the balcony, cause back in the day that was the only place you could smoke in a movie theater.

Alfredo: Living here day by day, you think it's the center of the world. You believe nothing will ever change. Then you leave: a year, two years. When you come back, everything's changed. The thread's broken. What you came to find isn't there. What was yours is gone. You have to go away for a long time... many years... before you can come back and find your people. The land where you were born. But now, no. It's not possible. Right now you're blinder than I am.
Salvatore: Who said that? Gary Cooper? James Stewart? Henry Fonda? Eh?
Alfredo: No, Toto. Nobody said it. This time it's all me. Life isn't like in the movies. Life... is much harder.

The one I mentioned is the Artcraft in Franklin, IN. It's about a half hour south of Indy.

And I just visited the real Artcraft site- it's not so good, go to www.franklinheritage.com instead.
