PBS...tis the season...for donations........

Post by mason »

The local PBS station in the bay area showed an awards show honoring James Taylor, as encouragement to donate to the PBS cause. Plenty of music celebs on hand to sing.... JT....songs of course. JB did a short taped monologue comparing
how his and ...JT 's....lives have paralled over the last 30 years. Mostly about hair, beards mustaches etc. There is more to what Jimmy said, but he did not sing. Cheryl Crow, David Crosby and Jackson Brown combined to sing....Mexico.... without the donation breaks the whole thing is entertaining.
There is a dvd, which may be available wherever you shop for those.
The local PBS was asking for $100 donations for it. If you happen to watch this on PBS or buy the dvd on your own, JB comes on after Bonnie Raitt, which is closer to the beginning than the middle or end. Also.....Jimmy was wearing THOSE.....glassess. :o :o :o

Watched the show on PBS because I heard about it here!
Jimmy's video was cute, but I was very disappointed that he did not sing!

We don't have cable and watch a lot of PBS. I've seen that show aired once on my local PBS channels (there are 2). However, I have seen Celtic Woman daily for almost two weeks. :o :o :o

They'll get no $'s from me and like it. Our local TV listings showed the "Great Preformances" segment as what was to be aired and when I tuned in it was some F%#&ING ballet. Very diasppointed, enjoy JT also and seeing JB would have been an added bonus. Darn volunteers, can't they get scheduling & aired programming right!

I'm less of a supporter of PBS now then I used to be. They would play all these great concert specials and say "if you like this performance, donate now to insure that you can see more programs like this during the rest of the year." So I would donate and generously and what do they do the rest of the year, no concert specials. So after a few years of this I called the station manager of my local PBS station and had a friendly chat and he told me that they wouldn't ever have those sorts of programs on during the non fundraising times. They were specials that were great at fundraising and not enough of them are produced each year so they can only do them during the fund drives. I accept what he said as being accurate and truthful yet I find the pitch during the fund drive to be less then accurate.

I caught the replay Saturday night. I was able to sit through 3 pleas for pledges and had to change the channel (after JT played 2 songs) when the 4th came around. In NC the pleas were at least 10 minutes long if not 15 minutes. I was surprised to see JB on so early in the show. I found the humor in JB's monologue as well as JT but the rest of the audience didn't have a clue. Too bad.

The reason the programming was off is because of pledge drive itself, there's nothing they can do about that. Personally I wholeheartedly support the arts, including PBS and NPR. They offer programming you simply can't get anywhere else.

Agree. I know this sounds like a plege break, but think if one day you woke up and there was no PBS or NPR. Would it be worth $10.00 a month to enjoy those programs? I know our satelite bill is outrageous compared to the quality programs on a very limited number of channels we watch on a regular basis.

It's worth the donation just to get Austin City Limits, Soundstage and the American Masters series which last year featured the Martin Scorcese directed Bob Dylan bio No Direction Home.

I used to volunteer at our long Island PBS station WLIW. I met some really cool people doing it. Cousin Brucie, Lesley Gore, Tony Randall and more. It amazed me how many people thought that the station was charging outrageous $ for books, dvd's or cd's as opposed to them being a thank you gift for the donation.
