Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Post by chitownpirate »

Heading out to Jamaica Jan 3 for the Sandals resort in Ocho Rios....it will be my first time on the island and I'm wondering if anyone has had anything to recommend aside from the standard tourist things like Dunns River Falls, etc...
I've already heard that it's not the safest to go outside the resort without an 'escort,' but are there any areas around there where you've experienced otherwise?
Thanks!

With regards to the "escort"....

It is fairly cheap to hire a driver for the week or even a few days. They can take you away from the tourist traps and they can also keep you out of the bad areas.

When we went, we looked at renting a car. Hiring an driver was not much more than renting a car.

As long as you are in Jamaica to meet all the Americans fresh off the cruise ship, its a great place to go.

Speaking of which, if you want to go do the touristy things, go before the cruise ship docks. Prices go up rapidly once the boat is docked.

Dunnes Falls admission while boat is on the way in - $5
When we left Dunnes as the cruise crowd was getting there - $25

but go during the day.... after 9pm it turns into a Hip Hop disco

we have found that if you chat up the staff at the resort, you will get the best ideas of where to go and what to do.....

and of course I'll be checking out M'ville...it'll be the first one out of the states for me.
Thanks again for the tips! :pirate:

When we were there a couple years ago, the DJ was basically playing elevator music for the cruise ship crowd. We asked for some JB. He was pleasantly surprised and happy to oblige.

If you go, wear something that can get wet. They have a great water slide.

Have you visitied Tripadvisor.com? They have a great forum to talk to fellow travelers. We are going to Negril in April and can't wait to go back to Jamaica. (5th visit)

There is a couple on Tripadvisor that run Talk of the Town Tours (TOTT is their name on the board) that I have heard great buzz over. They come higly recommended.

Don't be worried about leaving your resort. Just use the same common sence that you would use in your own town.

Safe Travels!!!!

We went mid-afternoon. The DJ started by playing Why Don't We Get Drunk. It really got the crowd going, even the non-JB fans.
