So my son has been about as sick as you can get this past week with what appears to be the flu crap. :-?

Along with it comes a nasty cough. But he HATES cough medicine. Totally gags at the thought of taking it. So does a friend/co-worker of mine.

But it doesn't bother me in the least. [smilie=nope.gif]

You?

Tastes like wine to me!

The first time I tasted wine (communion in a Lutheran church, where they don't use grapejuice), I thought, "This tastes like cough medicine."

Son hates it and Nyquil, too, but I MAKE him take it if he needs it. He has to have a cup of water handy to wash the taste out of his mouth.

I will take a couple and put in a cup of water to have ready for
the over night . I do take cough syrup but I cannot wake up too
groggy so past a set time I go with the drops in water..

No problem at all. Take Robitussin now, but when I was young(er) I would take Cheracol and I actually really liked its taste.

We just had the real influenza here, for three entire weeks. We used Mucinex pills for a while (It has a kids version too if your son is a child) .... til the doc finally gave us a script for some Tannate-12 suspension that only requires a TEAspoon every 12 hours. It worked and it was such a small amount only twice a day that it wasn't too bad. Very mild flavor but chalky texture.

Codeine or any narcotic for that matter are effective cough suppressants. In fact heroin was developed in the late 1800's, and one of it's medical indications was as a cough suppressant. Today, though, evidence based medicine fails to show any improvement in your speed to recovery from your average cold, flu, upper resperitory infection, etc. from the use of over the counter cough medicines. Especially in preschool aged kids. Thats funny considering it is a gazillion dollar business.

We had the crud pass here a couple weeks ago. I have no problems with Nyquil. But what REALLY helped was hot herbal tea and brandy. Grandma's magic cough medicine

I got Codeine!!!!

I also had a tickling cough that was making me gag and be sick the other week - I ended up taking benedryl ...... I know cough medicine is pretty useless - but it makes a mental difference ....

(and yes - cough medicine is a waste of time apparently .... )

Yes.. this cough is a realllllly bad 'tickle' that is driving him nuts..

Ricola for the tickle, doesn't do much for the actual cough, but helps with the coughing fits caused by the tickle and dry throat.

Fruit Breezers from Halls is pretty good for the tickle, too. It soothes it. They don't have that strong taste or odor that the medicated Halls seem to have...

I get HistinexHC, prescription for the actual cough...that's with codeine..and it's really good stuff...but doesn't do much for the feeling you get in your throat...

Good Luck
