Geee, I bet everyone wonders where I fit in this
Mal thinks I'm weird.
I like dogs, grew up with them, but have never wanted to have one since I got my first cat.
It's funny about the smell thing....I can tell a dog lives in house the minute I walk in. The doggie smell even lingers in cars they ride in.
It must be all in what you get used to. Cats themselves don't usually have an odor. (dirty litterboxes are another matter) I own an electronic litterbox that sweeps the stuff into a plastic container when kitty is done.
I'd much rather take care of that than have to scoop poop from unexpected places in my lawn.

But that must be personal preference too.
My husband happens to like cats. Usually only secure men will admit to that.
Liking cats was a requirement in a date for me. I never wanted to be with anyone who needs complete obedience. Most men who don't like cats don't for the reason that they can't control them like they can a dog.
Anyway, I like most critters (have to admit to not wanting to be in the same room as snakes) and find people who advocate cruelty to any animal to be totally unfathomable.
I work with Heart of Michgan Animal Rescue.
www.heartofmichiganrescue.com The stories you hear are horrendous. Hearing any of you say you hate a kind of animal or joke about bad things happening to them makes me cringe.

boxes of s*** give ambiance to the place

At least we know where not to step that way!
I grew up with both, but dogs are not for me.
Luckily, I married and gave birth to cat men.
If that makes them queer, so be it...
I much prefer an animal that isn't fawning or noisy.

I currently have 3 cats and 2 dogs and 1 13 year old. My house was home to 10 finches, 3 rabbits and assorted guinea pigs for a while but I'm not adding more animals.
Out of my current mob the 13 year old makes the biggest messes.

Love my three furry pals. mr conched does too.
Although, when we leave, he always says, "if you were a dog, we'd take you with us."
One cat travels well and goes camping with us. We can always leave a couple of nights without "extra" care for the kitties.
Those timer/feeders work great.
I'd always like to have a dog like Great Dog Chippie!

I think that probably says it all.....

I grew up with a dog and a brother, but live with a house-full of women and cats now.
The cats make the girls happy, and that is good enough for me!

Don't really care for cats, but understand why folks like them.. they're too 'standoffish' for me.

Yes, you do have to put more work into a dogs care and such, but I just love 'em more than cats. WOOF!

Just because a person is allergic to cats is no reason to hate cats
As far as the litterbox smell, I have 2 cats and 1 litter box that I change weekly and scoop daily. And of the visitors that I have, no oen has ever complained. In fact several have stated suprise that there was no litterbox smell.
I have good kitties
BTW, I DO like small dogs like Beagles, but NO larger dogs!

And you're one of the good pet owners, KBNP.

Not everyone takes care of their pets as well as you do.

We have a special room for our kitties and box and clean it and change the litter regularly. Now don't get me wrong, they rule the house and they meander wherever their little minds take them. Our 6ft privacy fence isn't enough to keep one of them in even with stuff to supposedly keep them from climbing it.
That cat, Neo, is a character and even those that say "I don't like cats" I truly believe would find him amusing and a damn good cat.
Are dogs better? it depends on what you seek in a companion. I have found two or three cats in my life give me more companionship than any human ever could.
One of my wishes in this life would be able to know exactly what they were saying. Especially the day my Bogie was losing his battle with cancer when he looked up at me and said "something" it only came out as well you've heard cats but this was a sentence.... no human words could ever say what he was saying to me that day

I hear so many people say that, Penny..but I just don't see it. My cats have always followed me around, just like dogs. They have always wanted to be close by. And Tippi is constantly giving me kisses. I think there's a lot of misconception about cats, just like there is about certain breeds of dogs.
And I think Nancy nailed it. If you're a true animal lover you should respect that others may like something you don't. It doesn't make anyone right or wrong. The intense hatred some people in this world have against certain animals baffles me.

I would never choose to have a snake for a pet, but I respect them as living creatures that have their place on this big round ball of ours. They're cool...just not the pet for me.

When I walk the dogs at night before bed time, or as Mrs. TR tells the dogs, "It's night night time," our cat is right there in the mix of things... rain or shine

I wonder if my cat has canine envy

are you really my sister in disguise?

This sounds like something she would say about me
Dogs are nice and can be fun but too high maintenance and they do stink!

I chose both, but I wouldn't trade my cat for the world, I would only trade his cat for a huge sum of money and the dogs would be gone in a heartbeat (anybody want a couple of dogs? They've been to obedience classes, are laid back, fixed, shots are done for the year...)

I'm not anti-cat but I love my girls. Penelope is Mollie's cocker spaniel and Savannah Jane is Jim's beagle. They are part of the family and not loving them is not an option.
Hubby is more of a cat person. Due to my love for dogs and the dogs loves for eating kitties (and squirrels, moles, groundhogs and anything else that moves) we can't add to who lives here. Not even another dog. The girls are very territorial.
My best friend has a dog and a cat and I love both dearly. Kitty (yes, that's his name) is 16 and he is so old, he can no longer meow like normal. Now, he quacks. It's the funniest thing ever. Lexi, her schnauzzer (sp?) also thinks she's a cat!

No, the fact that they are cats is reason enough to hate them.

Anything under 50 pounds is not a dog...it's a rat with a gland problem.

Funny, Frank talks a big game, but when he comes to visit me, he enjoys hanging with my cat, sits with it, pets it, plays feather on a stick...
