I'm thinking the standoffish thing is a misconception. All but one of my cats have been people oriented. (The one worshipped only me and the rest of the world didn't exist
) However, they usually take some time to get to know people well enough to be lovey with them so visitors don't always see that.

It's funny about the smell thing....I can tell a dog lives in house the minute I walk in. The doggie smell even lingers in cars they ride in.
It must be all in what you get used to. Cats themselves don't usually have an odor. (dirty litterboxes are another matter) I own an electronic litterbox that sweeps the stuff into a plastic container when kitty is done.
I'd much rather take care of that than have to scoop poop from unexpected places in my lawn.
But that must be personal preference too.
My husband happens to like cats. Usually only secure men will admit to that.
Liking cats was a requirement in a date for me. I never wanted to be with anyone who needs complete obedience. Most men who don't like cats don't for the reason that they can't control them like they can a dog.
Anyway, I like most critters (have to admit to not wanting to be in the same room as snakes) and find people who advocate cruelty to any animal to be totally unfathomable.

Anyone who doesn't like cats is self-centered and needs fawning attention from their pet.

I too had a cat that worshipped me. Even my husband had to admit that cat loved me more than anyone ever could. Now I have a dog that does that, too.... a chow mix, and chows are revered for having CAT-like tendencies! They don't like or trust people until they get to know them. I call that good judges of character.
So I answered BOTH. My son was born three weeks before my beloved cat died of kidney failure, and he is a catlover through and through. He borderline hates dogs because of their goofiness. Nothing queer about him.

I am a dog person. I don't have a thing in the world against cats though. I love my kitty b/c he "came with" my husband and has certainly grown on me over the years (the cat, not my husband. Well, my husband has grown on me too over the years, but I digress
)
I'll be devastated my that crazy *astard cat's "time" comes, but we won't be getting another kitty after we lose him.
My doggies on the other hand....I guess the reason I'm a dog person is that I just LOVE coming home and getting big sloppy kisses from a big loveable mut (my dog, not my husband. Well,, my husband gives pretty good kisses too, but again I digress
)
When I'm sad, the doggies "get" it better than any human. As long as I live, I will never forget this: shortly after my mom died and I was just laying in bed crying, my German Shepherd hopped up on the bed with me. Instead of laying down and napping, he SAT over me and with just the very TIP of his tongue he licked the tears off my face. He was SO worried. Dang if I'm not tearing up as I write this.
I love my Crazy Kitty. But I REALLY love my mutts.

Let's have some real fun and make this all political...
Dog folks just seem to be too serious and kind of mean about the whole thing ... like conservatives.
Cat people are used to abuse and take it with a grain of salt ... BIBOMO ... like liberals.

That is a sweet story, but I disagree. Some cats get it and some dogs get it, and a lot depends on the spirit of the animal. Some seem to be OLD spirits, and some seem to have been a rat or rabbit in a previous life and don't have a clue. The dogs I've had probably wouldn't have behaved that way.
Here's my sweet story: I rescued my soulmate cat when she had four kittens (must have been her first litter). I found homes for them, then before I could fix her, mama was knocked up again.
The night she was giving birth, she was in terrible labor pains, but she would NOT have her babies in the box I'd fixed for her. She kept jumping in the bed and getting under my chin and in my arms, wanting me to hold her while she gave birth! I finally put her in her box and lay my arms around her in the box before she would settle down and proceed to give birth. We had a connection that 14 years after her death still brings me to tears.
