Now that you mention it, he wasn't great. Still, I'd rank his Thanksgiving performance above all of the aforementioned Superbowl half-times, except maybe Paul McCartney.

All right, he's off the list.

My question though, is who the heck is lining up the Superbowl half time shows?????

Here are the ones I remember, and they were pretty much all botched.

Aerosmith with Britney - absolutely awful.
Justin Timberlake and Janet - 'nuff said.
Paul McCartney - passable and G-rated, at least.
Rolling Stones - legitimate rock group, but they sounded terrible and looked worse.

None of them, though, (IMHO) fit the audience that's actually watching the game. Has ANYBODY actually wondered what a stereotypical football fan would like to see?

Even though I'm not necessarily a huge fan, seems to me that any of the following...

Toby Keith, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett (had to include him ), Hank Williams Jr., Kenny Chesney, Bruce Springsteen, ZZ Top, John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Bob Seger, Charlie Daniels, Martina McBride, The Eagles... (I could go on...)

would seem to "fit" the Superbowl better, considering they probably DO at least know how to catch a football.

I'm still having trouble with the idea that your average "beer and wings" football fan had ANY desire at all to see Justin Timberlake, or now has any desire at all to see Prince. :x

Am I off base here? :-?
I think so. Way off base.

I am not saying that the recent shows have been great, and I'd always love to see JB, but why the all the country stuff? It isn't only country music fans that watch football by a long shot. I can't stand 99.9% of country music and yet manage to watch several games a week.

(I have no idea why being able to catch a football is a requisite for a musician....)

Bob Segar wouldn't be bad...Springsteen...interesting...but I'd doubt he'd ever do something like that...maybe though.

As for Timberlake and such.....you have to remember that there are lots of non-football fans who watch the superbowl.....the half-time is more for them.....most football only fans are going to change the channel or head to the restroom at the bar.

Maybe you're right, but it'd surprise me...

I think if the halftime show was decent, the football fans would stay, watch, and even call their significant other over to see it too.

No real reason for listing all the country stuff except that I'd bet this week's paycheck 90% of them actually watch football (and can catch one!). Prince, Justin T., Janet... I feel pretty sure they couldn't name more than one player from each team.

Why does that matter?

First rule of speaking in public... and I assume performing in public... is "KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE." That way you can do something they'd enjoy and appreciate.

By running Prince, Britney, Janet, or Justin out there, whoever's setting this show up just broke that rule. Which has led to all of us complaining about the !@#$%@!$%$^@#%^ Superbowl halftime shows!

Ok. Watched the halftime show, and it was....

GOOD. REALLY GOOD.

Nobody is more surprised than me - wasn't a Prince fan back in the day, and really didn't expect much. The guy is a showman, though. Rocked the house, great use of pyrotechnics, played in the rain (appropriately enough) and sounded great.

Who knew??????? :D

best sounding halftime show ever. No question. That man can rock the house in a down pour.

I'm a Prince fan to a point. He's incredibly talented, played ALL the instruments on most of his albums, has written many hits for others ("you got the right stuff baby" - Ray Charles...) and on and on. Is he strange little guy, yah, genius tends to lean people that way in our field.

great show, and the reign was purple!'

I definitely think people have misjudged Prince over the years. He is an exceptionally talented musician and I'd dare to go as far as saying he is a musical genius. He can play every instrament in his own band and writes his own music and performs like no one else I've ever seen walk out on a stage. Sure, his music might not be for everyone's tastes, but his music invokes emotion (albeit highly sexual most of the time) in a way I could easily compare to how Jimmy makes me feel with some of his music.

I've seen Prince perform a full-length concert with no more than a 15 minute break so one of his band members could do a solo tribute to Ray Charles. No intermission and he owned a stadium of over 20,000 people. I think Prince is a true narcissist and works it for everything it is worth.

To try and lump Prince in the category of Britney would only be done if you truly did not understand his music.

I too was pleasantly surprised. I'm by no means a Prince fan but the show held my interest and he was entertaining. Much better than I expected. I can separate appreciating someone for their talents from whether or not I like what they do if that makes any sense.
