It turns out most of the wine I like is also very cheap

My current favorite is Blue Heron (local Michigan winery St Julian)

" 35,000 to 40,000 cases this year to satisfy demand, which has grown 15 to 20 percent every year since it was introduced in 1999. Those case numbers represent a sizable chunk of the winery's total production of 120,000 cases of wine. By comparison, the average boutique winery in Michigan might make 5,000 cases total.

"We've been looking for a flagship product for years," said Braganini. This thing's got legs -- I mean wings," he said.

And it's not just another sweet wine to appeal to tourists. It wins medals, including Best of Class at last summer's Long Beach Grand Cru Wine Competition. Braganini said production of the $7 white wine has practically created a winery within a winery to keep up with production.

The blend is Riesling, Vidal and Seyval, and the grapes are all Michigan-grown.

Riesling is on the rise out here in California. Two typea, a dry and a sweet. Dry Riesling is paired with spicy foods, like Thai and the sweet goes great with cheeses and PIZZA :D Try A LOT and be sure to tell us ALL of your favorites!!

Cheers :D

Try this woth reds-

Get your nice crystal or at least glass pitcher and our the entire bottle of red wine in the glass container for about 30-45 minutes before you drink it. IT just might get rid of that turpentien flavor you are talking about  Drink more red wine!!! Try a Cabernet Franc for something different

fetzer merlot is quite nice.

a little sweeter than most merlots. in a blind tasting i thought it was a pinot noir.

the finest merlot i've ever had is duckhorn winery's merlot.

Bob Roberts wrote:After touring the Biltmore Winery this past weekend and loving the "Tasting Room", my wife and I have a greater love for wine. On special occasions, I've picked up a bottle of White Zinfandel from time to time and we've enjoyed it. However, we were opened to some new kinds this weekend. We ended up falling in love with Biltmore's Chenin Blanc. However, we discovered some fantastic wine at an Italian restaraunt called "Moscato d' Asti". It is a very smooth and sweet white wine. That is basically what we like.

So, what do you all like the best? What do you suggest?
Don't worry about other people who think you should only like dry reds. I like all kinds of wine, I prefer dry reds, but there is a time and place for every wine. I'd much rather drink a nice sweeter wine at a small winery that is known for their sweet whites than to try the one dry red they make there that tastes like dirt. And not the good dirt.

If you are interested in exploring reds or dryer wines, I would suggest taking a wine course, a lot of communities offer them- you learn about different charactaristics in wine and what to look for and it really helps you decide which types of wines are best for you.

I started out on Sutter Home White Zin many, many years ago. I've come a long way, baby, when they had me chewing on toothpicks and sniffing cotton balls dipped in vanila to learn about 'woody' and 'vanilla' characteristics in a course I took in college. (3 credits, for drinking wine every wednesday afternoon for a semester- )

I do know one thing, while I appreciate fancy wine, I am not a wine snob. I'll drink whatever is offered to me and like it! 8)

Try the Rieslings, there are some good ones from the Finger Lakes, NY region if you can get them. Johannesburg is the sweeter variety, and then you can also try some semi-drys that are pretty tasty as well. Those are really nice.
