To build a car, just the facts
In another topic, there was a discussion on Toyota's built in the USA
Here are some facts
Hillbillies don't slap them together for $6 an hour. The UAW makes sure of that. They make atleast $20.
Not all parts come from over seas. That are alot of parts made here in the USA.
Not all the monies go back to Japan. They have pay for everything in their Tennesee plant such as buildings, people, material, etc... And they have to pay for outside suppliers and a muititude of OTHER services only know to those in the industry.
I know this because I have worked in the industry for almost 8 years. My plant builds parts for Ford, whick goes to USA, Canada, Mexico and overseas. And DiamlerChrysler which is USA, Canada, and overseas. Some of our sister plants do make parts for Toyota and other Car companys.
It's no longer US and Them.

Re: To build a car, just the facts
Working 5 minutes from the Hyundai plant and living 20 minutes from the soon-to-be Kia plant, I can attest to how many local businesses there are. Typically large car manufacturers REQUIRE that a percentage of components be available locally. One of Hyundai's suppliers just bought a huge Winn Dixie distribution center across the street from the plant in order to secure business.Sidew13 wrote:Not all parts come from over seas. On the flip side, approximately 5 of the 8 automotive component manufacturers in the Auburn area are Korean/Asian owned and operated.

We were talking specifically about Toyota. The UAW doesn't have much influence, as Toyota's US manufacturing plants are not unionized.Sidew13 wrote:Hillbillies don't slap them together for $6 an hour. The UAW makes sure of that. They make atleast $20.

In 1997, just over half the parts in the cars Toyota sold in North America came from the United States and Canada. In 2005, that figure was 70 percent, and it's rising every year. GM and Ford, on the other hand, are moving in the other direction. GM, for example, put 80 percent U.S. and Canadian-made components into the cars it sold domestically last year, down from 91.5 percent in 1997, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

true.. Ford and GM have shipped a lot of their manufacturing over the border into the Mexican trade zones. Cheap labour, low environmental reg enforcement, authentic Mexican restaurants.Y-NO-9-O wrote:http://www.shns.com/shns/g_index2.cfm?a ... A-06-12-06

Specifically, I believe the vehicle in question was a Toyota Corolla.rednekkPH wrote:We were talking specifically about Toyota. Which is manufactured in Fremont, CA by NUMMI, a joint venture of Toyota and GM.
The facility employs approximately 5440 - 4550 are represented by the UAW, the other 890 salaried.
I would say that rules out "$6 an hour hillbillies".
The line between foreign and domestic in the auto industry has been blurred to the point of invisibility.

you haven't seen the south side of CMH... they followed the Hillbilly Highway (23) up from KY and stayed where they fell off the truck.Coconuts wrote:There are more hillbilly rednecks here in the Detroit area than I have seen anywhere before- and I'm from Indiana!!!RinglingRingling wrote:I thought it was pretty much defined by the borders of KY, WV, AR, and MS?AlbatrossFlyer wrote:inbreeding knows no borders.alphabits wrote:The Clampetts moved to Fremont?AlbatrossFlyer wrote:I would say that rules out "$6 an hour hillbillies".
