Puppy troubles.....

Post by Dally »

As some of you know, I have an 11 month old shih-tzu named, Buffy. Well about a month ago she started showing signs that she's about to go into heat......I have an appointment to get her spayed on January 16th. Well around the same time she also started this annoying habit that is just driving me crazy, but I don't know if it's related to her going into heat.

This is where y'all come in! :D :D

She has started licking and scratching EVERYTHING......mostly wood. (i.e., walls, headboards, desks, tables, dressers.) She'll scratch it then lick it and vice versa. She does it 24/7!!!! It is driving me and my mom absolutely BONKERS! I have no idea why she has started doing this.

Have any of y'all had any experience with this, and how in the world can I stop it???? :-?

THANK YOU in advance!

Just beat it senseless... that usually works.

Seriously though, I don't know if it has anything to do with being in heat. I had a boxer growing up. He used to chew/lick/scratch anything that was wood. Something about moisture and the way he felt in his mouth.

I believe that the licking and scratching is probably due to an anxiety issue. Talk to your vet about this....there is still time to retrain her....

Ha! We got a dog from an animal rescue place that was named Buffy. We had to rename her because everybody would say Buffy, pause 2 seconds and then say "Vampire Slayer"? I thought it was awesome, but the Mrs. didn't agree. The dog's even blonde!

We now return you to your originally scheduled thread.

she's a 6 lb. bundle of psychotic, snarling Cujo-ness and as soon as she finds a sub-miniature vampire, they're in big trouble.

maybe if they choke on her.. otherwise, she's a snack-sized juicebox.

There is a spray- I think sour apple flavored- at pet stores that you just spray on whatever she is licking/chewing. They don't like the taste, so they eventually stop!

That's my vote. I use it on my plants I brought in for the winter to keep the cats from using them as a litter box... It only lasts a few hours, so you have to respray every day until they get tired of trying.

My first guess was an anxiety issue. Ceasar Milan's had several cases with non-stop licking on his show. (I recomend his books HIGHLY as well.)

Has there been some new stress or changes in your home?

Another cause may be a nutritional problem. What are you feeding her? Any change in diet?

unfortunately I had a dog with severe anxiety(who also did the licking)...teh spray didn't work....

My guess would be that she is stressed as she is going in heat...this has caused the problem (if I had to guess)

obviously you've never been introduced to my puppy!  To be a girl dog, she's definately got a version of "little man's syndrome."

thank you for the advice......I'll try and find some of that spray, and I'll have a talk with my vet about the anxiety stuff. When I mentioned something to the vet's assistant about the situation she said she had never heard of such a thing and didn't know what the problem could be. :-?

She does have anxiety problems and barks and growls at the drop of a hat since she started showing signs of going into heat......

I don't know.....I'll be sure to let y'all know when we figure something out! Thanks again! :)

puppy prozac, had a cat that did basically the same thing, except she'd lick the same spot on her leg until it was exposing the muscle...

she'd had an extremely violent experience as a kittien, before I got her...

the vet took one look after I described what she was doing and said....mental..

worked like a charm..equivalent to valium and she didn't have to take it all the time, just when she started acting out..

I forgot to put that in my original post......but Buffy does the same exact thing. She gnawed and licked so much that she had to be put on antibiotics. :-? :(
