Actually, no... the original lyrics are:nutmeg wrote:Is it possible that even though Jimmy is not listed on the credits that he helped write the song. (after all it has his sister's name in it...)
Second set the owner Charlie
Get's up with the band
A beer in his hand
And sings "Curtis Lowe"
Then he raises a toast...

I've been trying to post on this thread fo 24 hours, but with CHRISTMAS and all, but I digress.
I wasn't at the Belly Up on Friday (was it Friday?). I was in Charleston and enjoying the concert online and posting with a GREAT group of phriends here. Anyway, I can't personally verify Jimmy's state of absolute sobriety, but I can speculate ...
I noticed it as soon as he said it and commented to my hubby, "Bubba must be drankin' ... he just said he wrote Bama Breeze." Obviously he knows he didn't write it. If he'd written it, he wouldn't have had to re-work the chorus to get Lulu and Lynrd Skynrd in there. I think he just simply misspoke, as, Bless His Heart, he does from time to time. I'm not complaining, just something else to endear the man to me.
Over the past 29 years, I've heard and read more than a few times, someone say how surpised they were to see their name listed under the songwriting credit when they'd just helped him work out a few words here or there, or some chords, etc. Anyway, my point is, Jimmy seems quite generous with giving songwriting credit to those who provide either true collaboration or a just little help to him. I honestly think he meant to say, "I recorded this song ....," but said instead "I wrote this song ..." didn't realize his mistake, and went right on into the description of the Flora-Bama.
Maybe I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, but then again, he's eaned it! That's my 2 cents' worth!
Oh, and, in case someone else hasn't said it ...
Breathe in, breathe out, move on
Know it's cheesy (in this context), just couldn't resist!!
Merry Christmas all!!

Re: Bama Breeze songwriting credit?
Mr. Play, don't you realize you can't say anything on these boards without getting the grief you got for your post?? You asked a simple question and instead of getting any kind of real answers or actual insights, you just got hammered, mainly from that one guy [I can't use "idiot" or they will delete my post] because they see you as being negative. Geez.Mr Play wrote:At the Aspen show 12/22, JB said he wrote Bama Breeze. At first I though it was just a slip, but then he said it again.
The BN song database lists the songwriters as Chris Tompkins, Josh Kear, and Mark Irwin.
So why is Jimmy taking credit for someone else's work?
I noticed he said he wrote the song, too, and was wondering about it. It's laughable, the reactions you got from your post.

I'd venture to say everyone here has misspoken on some subject, some time in their lives. I know I have. Most of us are just lucky enough not to have everything we say recorded for future scrutiny.
Of course Jimmy knows he didn't write the song. Also, Bama Breeze was in the time frame when the extremely drunk guy with the raised beer bottle tried to charge the stage.... Jimmy and the band played on while Charleston waded through the crowd and literally tossed the guy out, but it sure was distracting, no doubt moreso from Jimmy's perspective on stage.... Probably distracting enough to cause an error like this one....
I was just a few feet away; Jimmy wasn't drunk, or even buzzed. He appeared completely sober.

It was a simple mis-spoke. Typical which is for anyone in crowd this. No biggie just funny. Soft of like when he does the second verse opf Cheeseburger twice on Feeding Frenzy. When you do as much public speaking as he does it's bound to happen. He's just human.

Writing Credit
Greetings pholks! Just got an email from my publisher letting me know this discussion was taking place... Just wanted to assure all of you that in no way do any of the writers of Bama Breeze take any offense by Jimmy's choice of wording during his recent concert. I've rearranged a few thoughts myself after being overserved with adult beverages (not that I can say for sure if Jimmy had or had not been overserved). Thanks to all of you who have been galiantly "defending our honor" online! It's nice to see that songwriters everywhere are appreciated and loved!!! Best of the holiday season to all of you and yours. Don't forget to put an umbrella in your egg nog!!!
Happy Holidays!

Thanks for your thoughts!
I can tell you that from my vantage point a few feet away, JB didn't seem overserved, however the atmosphere was a very noisy bar, so I can see how he could be easily distracted.
Thanks for a great song, and don't be a stranger!

Not to prolong this discussion, but it is interesting. If you go back and listen again, he just says he did the song, the second time after the description... if I'm not mistaken.Mr Play wrote:Like I said in my very first post, I thought it was a slip at first too. I'll bet Jimmy didn't even realize he said wrote that first time.
Good to see Josh post here. Welcome.

Well as a former dj I can tell you it IS a big deal to take credit for other peoples work. To this day Vanilla Ice still trys to clain that Ice Ice Baby is not the same song as Under Pressure that was recorded by David Bowie & Queen. All I can say is PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
The point is Jimmy should only take credit for what he did. Alan Jackson wrote "I'm in love with a waitress and I don't even know her name" an d gave credit to his nephew on the song writing credits because he used to tease him about a title for a song. Billy Ray Cyrus gave credit to his ex-wife for "Where Am I Gonna LIve" because he said she was the inspiration, even though she didn't write a word of it.
The point is if the songwritter wants you listed you'll get credit. If not you didn't have anything to do with it. So if changing the arrangement (sometimes because they can't play it the way it was recorded ie, countless Egles songs) or a lyric or two is enough to get songwritting credit there are a lot of bar bands that are gonna get rich.
I hope it was a slip of the tounge otherwise shame on Jimmy!

Heh.
Well, it's no secret that Buffett doesn't write many songs anymore. 90 percent of the albums are covers are co-writes.
