Strep-Throat for Grown-Ups*updated with poll*

Post by buffettbride »

Anyone ever had it as an adult?

I've had it since the day after Christmas and all I can say is it's the absolute sickest I've ever been as an adult. I had a bad bout of it about 4 years ago where I just couldn't seem to get rid of it, but I have literally been in bed for 4 days.

Since I've been sick, I've lost 15lbs, President Ford has died, and Saddam Hussein has been hanged, so obviously the world hasn't stood still for my illness, but by God there have been times the last few days that I would have rather been giving birth than experiencing the headaches, chills, body aches, and near-throat-closures of this week.

Today is the first time I've even ventured downstairs and I'm bed-bound not too long from now once the kids have their (early) lunch and the 'lil one is down for nap. Hubby has been a good help (although, he didn't do the dishes for the first whole day 'cause he figured I'd be back in the saddle in no time).

I just can't believe such a little tiny germ can make a person like me so sick and that it has lasted so long.

unless you've had a throat culture to confirm step, I'd suspect you have a good ol fashioned case of the flu....

I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

I get strep at least once a year, so I feel your pain.....it is a nasty little critter that makes every bone, every muscle, every CELL in your body hurt.....the good thing is that once you get an antibiotic on board, it does get better fairly quickly....at least the really, really miserable part of it. Seems like then it just turns in to a 'normal' sore throat/cold thing.

BB sorry you're feeling so crummy. With all those symptoms, I think you have more then just strep.

I feel like I've been run over by a truck. I'm almost to the 'normal' stage today. It's just never taken so long to get to this stage before. Usually a day on antibiotics will have me back on my feet, but it's day 3 now and I still feel like I should be in bed (and will be in about 15 minutes).

*ouch* I HATE STREP THROAT !! I hope you're better today Mal. A lot of people all across the good ole US were sick over the holidays. There's some mean stuff out there. And everybody getting together at parties, dinners, etc. just made it spread worse. Only three-four months till spring...that's my mantra.

Get well soon. If the doc hadn't confirmed it I would have thought it was a means to avoid all the snow outside! :D

I get it about every other year, when my daughter brings it home from school. It is a nasty little beast so take care of yourself.

I had it as a kid but do not remember symptoms like you have. I didn't know it could even do that but I do know that sometimes you can have it and it be mild and not even know it's strep and if it goes untreated can run into serious organ (liver, kidney) damage.

I only know because of my x-wife's son having a bad stomach ache one night in the middle of the night, took him to the hospital to find out he had strep that had begun to spread to his intestines.

Wow, sorry to hear you've been so sick, Mal...strep is miserable. :( You're right that you usually start to feel better after a day or so of antibiotics. This may be a bit late now, but my guess is the antibiotic originally prescribed didn't do much against the strep (resistant or not sensitive). I'd have called the doctor for a different antibiotic at the start of day 3...and you may still want to check with the doctor to see whether you should get on a different one.

I hope you feel better soon.
