6th street in Austin is one of the greatest stretches of bars in the US. Just walk up and down 6th street and you will find a bar to you liking so many diverse places to choose from with great live music.

There's a little strip of restaurants / bars on Town Lake.
The Hula Hut is one with a tropical theme.
That whole area is pretty cool;

The Oasis up on Lake Travis is worth the trip for the view;

Austin is a great town. As previously mentioned 6th street is a stretch of bars. They close it down to car traffic on weekends so it becomes a lot like Beale street in Memphis or to a somewhat lesser extent Bourbon street in New Orleans.
I wish I could offer you some specific names of bars but just find one that is playing music you like and go in.
Sixth street will always stick in my mind as the place where my friend almost got arrested for something he said to a mounted female police officer. I was out of earshot, and he was too drunk to remember, but she was dismounting and going for the cuffs when I intervened and promised to take him back to the hotel! Too funny!!

Dang - you should be coming to austin to hang out with us for Jerry Jeff and Asleep at the Wheel the weekend of the 19th!
Hula Hut is a great place. close to downtown and try the Lake Austin Lemonades
The Oasis is on Lake Travis. They toast the sunset every night. it is something you need to do.
I don't think there is a Buffett type bar - but I love to hang at the Mean Eyed Cat on 5th. It is out of the downtown area. beer, wine and and great mix of country, rock, etc.
6th street - you will find a lot of college age pholks. 4th street is a little older. if you like irish pubs - i would say fado's. if you can go off 6th and like music - go to the continental club (south congress past the bridge)
you can always check the austin chronicle for the music for the weekend. it comes out on thursdays. they have great suggestions for food places too.
feel free to pm me... lived there for 3 years and go back as often as i can.
