I realize I'm gonna set off a firestorm here,
but if you try to look at this objectively...

Please tell me how do you vote in a player who won 0 MVP's...
helped lead his team to 0 pennants or division titles...
didn't win a league home run title
and didn't hit 350 home runs when one of his contemporaries (Henry Aaron) hit over 700?
I always thought the power hitter's over/under for HOF consideration was 400 HR's...

I remember Santo, and he was a rock, ...very solid...but I also think, for HOF worthiness, you really have to consider how much a player's success
also contributed to team success, and while he was a city's favorite and a sentimental favorite... he's just not making the HOF cut.
Yeah, you raise some good points, but the Hall of Fame is based on the player's contributions on the field, not necessarily how many championships he's won. (i.e.-Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ralph Kiner, et. al.).
As for his M.V.P.s-it was a tough award to win in Santo's day playing with the likes of Clemente, Mays, McCovey, Aaron, Koufax, Gibson, and players of that ilk. Among today's players (and I'm NOT trying to take anything away from Albert Pujols and others who play up to his standards), Santo may not be a shoo-in for M.V.P., but he'd easily finish in the top 3.
Yeah, I'm biased, but come on-if those clowns on the veteran's committee had ANY objectivity at all, he'd have been enshrined YEARS ago.

As for the c--ks--kers on the B.B.W.A.A., I really don't want to air my feeling here on THOSE idiots.

Good feedback, guys... thanks

Looking at the comparative stats provided, it makes me think, even more,
that the BBWAA is punishing him for the '69 collapse and the Cubs failure to make the postseason during that era.

All the others mentioned were part of World Series teams, right?

I think there could be a "smarter" election system in place for HOF AND post-season awards. Letting the writers have exclusive rights is just BS :x :x :x

Just don't get the fans involved. Then they'd have to change the name to the Hall Of The Most Popular Players.

Three and potentially four HOF members from the same team that didn't win anything, some say that proves what a bunch of chokers they were. Wrong! It proves what a bad manager Leo Durocher was for the Cubs. played the same 8 day in and day out in one of the hottest summers in Chicago on record ('69) and used older bullpen pitchers like Phil Regan till their arms fell off, while young arms sat and watched

Looks like the Braves are picking up some MUCH needed pitching help

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/arti ... p&c_id=atl

Mark Redman agrees to Minor League deal

While announcing that they'd signed Mark Redman to a Minor League contract on Friday afternoon, the Braves also revealed that Redman will start for them in Saturday afternoon's game against the Blue Jays at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.

"It's a great pick-up," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "We're thin."

The Braves became much thinner in the starting pitching department on Wednesday, when Hampton strained his left oblique during batting practice. The ailment, combined with the uncertainty he still faces while coming back from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, leads the Braves to believe Hampton will be out at least two months.

Redman, who went 11-10 with a 5.71 ERA for the Royals last year, seemingly overpriced himself on the free-agent market this past offseason. Thus he was still available for the Braves, who didn't even contact him until Thursday.

And some things never change...

Pavano Skips Start For "Personal Reasons"

Carl Pavano's troubled time with the Yankees continued on two fronts Friday. Because of a personal problem, the righthander was scratched from his start and left Legends Field 45 minutes before game time, and word got out that he is being sued for a car accident last August that the police report said was his fault.

Pavano was to make his second start of spring training at 7:15 Friday night against the Devil Rays. At about 6:30 p.m., he approached manager Joe Torre and pitching coach Ron Guidry to tell them of a personal situation of concern to him. Moments later, director of media relations Jason Zillo announced that Pavano had left the building and would not pitch because of personal reasons.

Hopefully after 14 losing seasons in a row the Pirates will give their fans something to see when they go to the ballpark other than fireworks and bobbleheads
