Rollins led the majors in at-bats...but he also led the league in OUTS.
527 time he came to the plate and came away empty.
Very true.

But the At Bat to K ratio is sick!

How many times to he advance a runner because he didn't strike out . . .

that is Rollins' best stat . . . over 700 atbats . . .less than 80 K's

Amazing!
He actually struck out 85 times.

Not so amazing, by the way.
He struck once for every 8.15 at-bats.

The record is one time every 276 at-bats (pre-1900)
Modern record is still every 167.70 at bats (Joe Sewell, 1933)
To be one of the top 500 seasons of all time, (which might help qualify it as amazing), he'd need that number to be above 32.40.

IN FACT....the top 5 in the NL this year...he's not even on the list.

Pierre-LAD 18.1
Loretta-HOU 11.2
Eckstein-STL 11.0**
Theriot-CHC 10.7
Vizquel-SFG 10.7

**This number was adjusted to get him enough ABs to qualify. He actually only struck out every 19.7 AB, but only batted 434 times.

I just found an interesting article.

Can you name the team with the smallest number of home-grown players in 2007?

I have to run, so I'll just tell you...

The White Sox had THREE home-grown players...

True . . . but what I was referring to is having over 600 atbats in one season without striking out . . . amazing by anyone's standards . . .

most don't even get 500 atbats . . . so to have 600 + atbats with out a K is huge.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

The 2008 Hall Of Fame Ballot is out....

Weak class of 1st-timers, maybe this is the year for Gossage, Rice, McGwire, Blyleven or one of the others? 75% of the vote is required for enshrinement.

1st Time Candidates
- Brady Anderson, Tim Raines, David Justice, Rod Beck, Shawon Dunston, Chuck Finley, Travis Fryman, Chuck Knoblauch, Robb Nen, Jose Rijo and Todd Stottlemyre

Holdovers (with their 2007 vote percentages)
Rich Gossage (71.2)
Jim Rice (63.5)
Andre Dawson (56.7)
Bert Blyleven (47.7)
Lee Smith (39.8)
Jack Morris 202 (37.1)
Mark McGwire (23.5)
Tommy John (22.9)
Dave Concepcion (13.6)
Alan Trammell (13.4)
Dave Parker (11.4)
Don Mattingly (9.9)
Dale Murphy (9.2)
Harold Baines (5.3).

This is Rice's 14th attempt, if he doesn't make it, next year will be his last chance.

LET'S GO, RICE!!!

Rice is a lock this time. No way he doesn't get it. He is due. And no one deserves it more.

I bet Rice and Gossage get in this year. Doesn't look like there are any first ballot locks, so this will be a good year for the guys that have been candidates forever to get in.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

As we know from past history, there is no such thing as a lock in HOF voting. Just remember, one or more of these idiots will leave Roger Clemens off their HOF ballots the year he becomes eligible.

Looking at the 1st timers: Raines will probably get in. After that Justice is the next best candidate, but his numbers don't stand out. The Bill James HOF Monitor only rates him at 43.5, with 100 being the usual standard for election. Nobody else is really worthy, IMHO, so that helps Rice and Gossage.

there has never been a unanimous vote. I think Nolan Ryan was the closest at 90 something percent. Not sure though

Cal Ripkin got the most votes ever, but Tom Seaver is still number one in vote percentage.

The fact that Trammel and Morris arent in is just a big example of the East Coast Bias in the Voting. If they were Yankess or Red Sox they would have been in long ago.

Yeah, that's why Jim Rice only has this year and next left for eligibility.
