Morris, yes.
Trammell, I'd vote no.

Trammell, career BA of .285, averaged only 118 base hits per year. Non-extraordinary power and speed numbers....good but nothing that truly distinguishes him. Only 1 year with over 100 RBI. To get in based on defense, you have to be one of the legends...like Ozzie. AT doesn't qualify.

OK, without actually setting up a poll....let me ask all of you. If you had a vote, and could only select ONE player, who would it be? Feel free to let homer-ism influence your vote, but I want you to explain WHY he is more deserving than the rest...

One vote? Rice, I guess. But for a RH slugger that played his entire career in Fenway Park, he only averaged 24 HR a season.

True, and his season average is lower because of the strike season and his last few seasons. I like the .298 batting average, and he finished in the top 5 MVP vote six times. I wouldn't have a problem with him getting in.

I think I would have to cast my vote for Murphy.

Call me an old sentimental guy and an homer (cause I'm both), but he put up respectable numbers for teams that plain out and out sucked.

Also, he hit for power without even a whiff of speculation he was on the juice or anything close to it.

I know those aren't good reasons to put someone in the HoF, but given the issues surrounding MLB especially this year, it would seem fitting.

Consider it two. Y'all made the argument I was going to. Yeah, compared to now his numbers ain't much. But compared to then? pretty damn good.

I'll throw one in for Rich Gossage.

317 saves (in an era where it was common to have more than 3 out saves)
3.01 career ERA
9 time all-star (including in his one season as a starter)
4 Top-5 Cy Young Award finishes (and we all know how hard that is to do as a reliever)
Won a World Series
2.87 postseason ERA
And if it makes any difference to any Bill James fans, his HOF Monitor Score is 126 (and 130 is considered almost a lock for a HOF'er)

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

If it means anything, the bolded players will all probably get in one day, probably in that order if I had a guess. I think Gossage and Rice, and maybe but not likely Dawson get in this year.

Alan Trammel. Compare his stats (Off & Def) with Ozzie Smith.

Quick aside here, the last question asked in the YouTube/CNN Republican debate tonight was a lighthearted question asking Giuliani why he switched his allegiance to the Red Sox in the World Series.

Giuliani answered of course because he was rooting for the AL and he's still a Yankees fan. He then went to make fun of himself and the other candidates by pointing out in an over-the-top politician manner that as mayor of NYC, the Yankees won 4 World Series. Since he's left, they've won 0. Romney then responded by saying how he's a Red Sox fan first and foremost and that he, like most Americans, loves his sports teams and hates the Yankees. Thought it was a good way to end the debate after endless questions about Iraq, abortion, the deficit, etc.

Jim Rice.

Over a 5 - 6 year stretch he was one of the most dominant hitters in the game. Few players, in their given era, can claim that. Add numerous other quality years to those 5 - 6 and you have, in my opinion, a legit Hall of Famer.

Numer 2 on that list would be Lee Smith.

Gotta vote for The Goose!
Rich Gossage really changed how relievers were perceived.
Prior to him most were just failed starters, not specialists.
So he was somewhat of a pioneer, IMHO anyway...

Until Gossage gets in there should never be another relief pitcher voted into the Hall.

I agree but for a different reason. You can't judge character. Even if it says it on the by - laws for hall of fame voting . . . and it does. You can't do it. Not when a guy like Ty Cobb is in the HOF.

Rose and Jackson should be in. It should be on the individual's performance on the field; nothing more . . .

UNLESS the performance was enhanced by something illegal.

As far as off the field stuff . . . we as fans just don't really want to know. And we never will.
