Slate Article on Jimmy

Post by phjim »

Slate magazine has an article: "A Pirate Looks at 60 - Jimmy Buffett's midlife crises".

By all accounts, Buffett lives the life he sings about. For his fans, most of whom aren't multimillionaires with large pleasure craft, the experience is vicarious: The closest many will come to a Caribbean lagoon is a kiddie pool in the parking lot of a Jimmy Buffett concert. Yet Buffett's songs are not so much about an escape to a place as a flight from time. His true theme is the Me Generation midlife crisis.

Thanks Phjim 8)
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

It's strange, the article seems to move back and forth from a really good read....one to share with the friends that don't get it yet.....then back to one that insults, or lists info that isn't dead-on.

"....Somewhere right now—probably a very warm, palmy place—the pirate is looking at 60 in the same way that he will look at 70, and, if his liver holds up, 80. Through a boozy haze...." I really don't think Jimmy boozes as much as Jody Rosen thinks or states.

"....Buffett turned 60 this past Dec. 25, a day he undoubtedly spent in a lower latitude, in a meditative frame of mind, in close proximity to a tankard of Captain Morgan...." We know that Jimmy spent his 60th high-up in the mountains, soon heading south, and I know she's using this as a link to his book, but again it sounds as if Jimmy is always drinking and partying it up, when we know that isn't always the case.

I guess I think Jody Rosen should have mentioned a few of the environmental and charitable things that Jimmy does. Might have helped make up for the extra 'boozer' comments.

But I do like the article, enough to pass it around the group of phriends I have. The ones who will know more about Jimmy and will understand why Jody has said what she has.

Doesn't it take a sharp mind to manage and organize multi-city tours?
Doesn't it take a sharp mind to oversee the Margaritaville label?
Doesn't it take a sharp mind to pilot a seaplane? Watercraft?
Doesn't it take a sharp mind to write and produce album after album?
Doesn't it take a sharp mind to co-produce a film?
Jimmy probably drinks as most do, and probably rarely gets drunk.

I thought there was some fair insight there and lyrics from songs not on SYKBH, but then the author made the mistake of thinking A Pirate Looks at 40 was autobiographical, and written 20 years ago. That is just lazy background work!

This is not entirely accurate and is somewhat insulting, but I think I got my laugh for the day from this line, "Go to Bob Dylan and Paul Simon for poetry and pretty tunes, but if you want to know how baby boomers ate, drank, and screwed on vacation, reach for Boats, Beaches, Bars, and Ballads."

I agree......very lazy or non-existent research. [smilie=thumbdown.gif] The fool OB-viously didn't come on here for background information. [smilie=intent.gif] Didn't listen to Jimmy's Freddy and the Fishsticks concert on Sirius, doesn't 'get it'. That's ok....not everybody can be as knowledgeable and up-to-date and smart as us here at Buffettnews. [smilie=coolup.gif] We're cool, daddy-o. [smilie=cool_goatee.gif]

Jody Rosen doesn't get it

Post by Mango Picker »

I had better expectations for this article, reading the lead in.

Cleary the writer does NOT know Jimmy's music. Jimmy's work is much deeper than just getting drunk.

So, Jimmy and we old geezers are boozehead losers?

Go see the youth of America on Girls Gone Wild and pray you don't see your daughter in it. LOL

Jimmy may be drunk, yeah, drunk with success.

Typical shallow article on Jimmy and his work.
