planning the spring break trip to OBX

Post by OceanCityGirl »

we'll be staying as usual in Frisco, NC and have done this for 5yrs. I always go with alot of teenage boys. This year they will be 19 and will be going but will be largely on their own except when they come in to graze through enormous amounts of food like cereal, seafood and pasta. Or they all try to convince me their parents won't care if I buy them beers.
But this year mr oc will be going which he's never been able to do. Looking for good things to do that we've never done and couple things which I've never been able to do in OBX.

We're planning on heading there with a few couples in the summer. Only been for a one-day drive thru there a few years ago. My sis in-law is looking for condos now, any suggestions on what town we want to make our HQ? She's kind of starting from scratch, I don't remember much from the area myself. Sounds like a lot of fun, though, looking forward to it already!

...teenage boys like beer? :o

I am going to answer both posts together or try to anyway :)

If you want to be in the middle of everything Nags Head is the most centralized location. Cape Hattera's is beautiful but a 60 mile drive to get there.

Manteo is not on the beach but much cheaper hotel wise than the beach area and only a 5 min drive to Nags Head if that.

Book now because we just booked our timeshare 2 weeks ago and we got May 6-12 in Kitty Hawk because everything was already booked until Sept for timeshare owners.

For other stuff to do. We always take the lighthouse tour. We pick one day during the week and drive to all the lighthouses. Taking the ferry boat to Ochrokoke Island is well worth the 45 min trip each way and it is free! We drive around the Island and do some shopping and hop back on the ferry. We do the same in Hatteras and then head up to the Northern end where the brick lighthouse is at near Corolla. This is usually a 12 to 14 hour day for us so when we are finished we are finished :)

We always spend a day in Manteo as well. The Aquirium is wonderful and for 7.00 well worth the price of admission. Then we walk around downtown and through the historical district. I am not big into the Elizabethan gardens at all.

Of course you have The Wright Brothers museum and huge sand dune park in Kitty Hawk. If I think of anything else I will post it

Not exactly a traditional romantic dinner but definately "a must" - fish tacos
http://www.tortugaslie.com/goods.htm

If you have time and $$ this is another good place - esp. at sunset http://www.goodfoodgoodwine.com/renovations.html

Ditto previous comments about light houses - the ferry ride to Ocracoke is fun and I still remember seeing the Corolla horses for the first (and still only) time. http://www.corollawildhorses.com/

I love flying kites at Jockey's Ridge too.

Have FUN!!!!
And raccoons brought wine and the mice they brought cheese...

we stay in Frisco every year. It is right near the tip of the island and nearly as far south as there is. We love it as it's quiet. It's good if you want to hang out with friends, sit on the beach or your deck, sip drinks, grill seafood, have a beach fire, etc. But there is no big entertainment except a few good food places. Also there is Teach's Hole - the gift shop full of pirate stuff in Ocracoke, The Pelican there also, has ten cent shrimp during happy hour that are really good, Bubba's for bbq. If you are in the area please check out the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras. I always give this place a plug. It's a new museum working hard to preserve the nautical heritage. The people are excellent and some of the gift shop workers are ph's.
Spend some time and talk to them and give them a donation. Tell them Tina from South Jersey recommended the place.
I want to do the Wright Brothers Museum this trip. My kids have no interest but we'll be in separate vehicles.
