Rode across Canada on a train with Fred and bands like Cowboy Junkies and Over the Rhine last month. Fred blew me away with his style and songwriting. Reminded me alot of the early Jimmy shows. Worth checking out if you like the songwriter with an acoustic thing. His double live cd's are only $9.99 on iTunes.
He toured with Jerry Jeff Walker and told some hilarious stories about those times. From what I've listened to of Walker, their music compliments each other quite well.

I've loved Fred stuff for years. Amazing songwriter. I've only seen him in concert twice but it was a blast!!
I was actually on a tribute album to Fred with some HUGE names on it. We did Drive in Movie. If you'd like a copy of that song, shoot me an email.
It's pretty darn good I must say.
We also do his stuff on our album that you can sample here
http://www.hillbillywinos.com on the Sounds page (then CD)

Thanks for the tip! I still listen to your version of "Pacho & Lefty" when I'm in a TVZ mood. I'll check out the other stuff on i-Tunes.
Cowboy Junkies do a wicked version of his "Carmelita" which is how I learned of him. Hearing him live was a treat. He called the Junkies the best headliner to tour with and had some less than nice things to say bout Jerry Jeff Walker.
A band called Blackie & the Rodeo Kings were also on the train. If you like this genre of music, they are worth a listen. All three guys in the bands are legends in Canada.

I just got back to reading this...wanted to know if the tribute album to Fred is the one called 20 Odd Hollers. I looked at my copy and looked up Drive In Movie, but didn't recognize your name on it.
Fred is a lot of fun. Saw him for the first time back in 1998 at a songwriter's circle at The Old Settlers Bluegrass Festival in Round Rock, TX and loved the way he did Wilder Than Her. He laughed about Dar Williams doing that song with him.
So much music...so little time!
