Finally, I have decided to come out of the dark ages and get either a Tivo or a DVR. However, I don't know what to get. What are the differences? Is it worth paying $400 on Ebay for a Tivo with a limetime subscription? I can get a DVR for $9.99 a month through my cable provider. What do you all think?

I suggest going with the DVR from your cable provider. My wife and I finally got the DVR after lookin into the Tivo. If there are any problems we just call our cble provider which is Optimum Online and they help us right away, plus with the tivo you need to run a telephone wire into it. The DVR is so simple and less wires, it also gives you the ability to put shows on your vcr if needed, however our DVR does not burn dvds.

Lifetime subscriptions are for the lifetime of the unit, I think, better check on that, if you pay $400 and the thing craps out in 6 months, that's it.

What he said. The DVR is so simple no extra wires boxes etc. Once you have it you wont be able to live with out it.

I've never had tivo, but LOVE the dvr we have from directv..........

I have the DVR through Dish Network and love it

i have dvr through comcast and love it. The drawbacks is that my brother has tivo and he can connect it to his harddrive and have much more storage. You are limited on dvr and with five people it quickly fills up.

I had TIVO for less than a year when I ditched it for my cable DVR. The cable DVR is much better and can record 2 programs, unlike the TIVO which could only record 1. Zuke is right- lifetime is for the life of the box, which could be tomorrow. I would go cable DVR.

I don't think the the lifetime agreement is transferable. You could end up with nothing.

But I do enjoy having TiVo.

DVR through Bright House (Time Warner)..... we have had it for a few months...and really enjoy the features.... its SO simple
