Like father like son I guess - turns out dad isn't one to let grass grow under his feet either. By the time I got around to checking reservations and so forth last week, he had already booked everything to KW. Here is their itinerary;
Grandpa Play wrote:We leave Dallas on Feb 19th and stay in New Orleans Feb 19th and 20th. I didn't know Fat Tuesday was on the 20th until I started trying to book a room in New Orleans! We stay at St Joseph Penninsula State Park Feb 21st and 22nd. Then we drive to Clearwater Beach and spend one night. Then on to Everglades City for one night and finally to Key West on the 25th for two nights before returning on Feb 27th.

I did book them on a seaplane trip out to Dry Tortugas / Fort Jefferson;

Dad was an instructor pilot in the Air Force but he's never been up in a seaplane, so I'm sure that will be a highlight of the trip for him.

That's a wonderful trip; I did it a couple years ago. Have your dad request to ride shotgun; that's what I did and it was great fun. They can get some good pics from the air, too (the fort, KW, shipwrecks, etc.). They'll need to take their own snacks and drinks, beach towels, sunblock, etc. as there are no facilities at the park. (They use rest rooms on the boats that make the day trip.) The fort is fun to explore, too. The snorkeling is okay.

For a place to stay in Key West, my favorite and very reasonable B&B is on a quiet stretch of William St. in Old Town (a must). Some of the rooms have shared baths but it's all really very nice and charming...fresh baked somethings every morning, fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit...a hammock and porch chairs, friendly staff. Parking can be a challenge so they should plan to park once and walk, taxi or bike around. The B&B is a fairly short walk from the harbor area.

The Conch Train is a nice way to get a feel for the island and some of it's history. If they're into the unique history of Key West the Wrecker's Museum on Duval St. is a great stop.

This is so nice for you to do this for your parents.

I asked my dad where he wanted to go with money we kids all gave them for their 60th anniversary. He said, "Key West." He passed away before we could take them there. :( So, we've taken Mom twice!
